Maybe it’s the result of growing up on vhs releases of Kubrick films where he went open matte, but I love a lot of headroom and dead space below. I love an image where the focal point is the center and I often go for that in my own photography.
The Odyssey was shot entirely in IMAX, right? So why are all the trailers in like 2.35? Are only IMAX audiences going to see the actual frames that Nolan and Hoyte composed? I’m tired of multiple ratios. One has to be correct and we should all get to see it that way. Cropped always looks off.
She turned LA back to 1969 for a summer and turned Gotham neon for two movies. She also designed the one and only feature film directed by David Byrne. Barbara Ling could do anything. Rest in Peace.
Lotta fine teams you could support in this thing, but we’re the cutest! Also - we’ve never lost. That’s a good investment. Donate here: secure.qgiv.com/event/trivia...
A Facebook memory from back when my daughter was almost four. RIP Bonnie Tyler
Next week’s entry in @thefridacinema.org’s Art House For Families series is the one I’ve been most looking forward to — Karel Zeman’s THE FABULOUS BARON MUNCHAUSEN! With an introduction by me! Guaranteed to make you want to go buy the @criterion.bsky.social! 🎟️: thefridacinema.org/movies/the-f...
At the end of the month, our trivia team will be competing in a tournament of champions. If you’d like to sponsor us with a tax deductible donation to @thefridacinema.org… YOU CAN DO THAT HERE: secure.qgiv.com/event/trivia...
Farewell to the genius, Louise Lasser. Great in so many things, but her performance of Mary Hartman over 325 episodes is a true feat. I wish it were more widely available so more people could marvel at that brilliance.
Someone setting off distress flares instead of fireworks because they understand the current National mood…
🚨 Mile End Kicks aka My Favorite Film of 2026 So Far, Is Now On Netflix 🚨
I was really amazed at how much downtown Santa Ana was celebrating my team’s trivia win!
As this is how my great great grandfather came to the US, I’m pleased with today’s Supreme Court ruling. But 3 Justices feel that my great grandfather wasn’t a citizen based on how his father got here. So is my 93-year-old grandmother also not a citizen in their eyes? What of my mom? What of me?
After years of pushing for an Arthouse for Families series at @thefridacinema.org it’s finally happening! We’ve already screened Bicycle Thieves and A Hard Day’s Night and next up is Invasion of Astro-Monster which I will be introducing at the 7:30 show! 🎟️: thefridacinema.org/movies/invas...
It’s PTA’s birthday which means I am legally required to repost my long piece on Liminality in his filmography. I don’t make the rules! cinemanerds.blogspot.com/2025/07/mago...
Watching that show about ILM on Disney+ and getting a chuckle out of how much young Dennis Muren looks like Ronan Farrow. Is this Ronan’s future?
Decided to keep mine all @criterion.bsky.social and include black, brown, and trans representation
Been rewatching Ducktales (2017) with my daughter who does not remember marathoning it during lockdown. She’s become really fixated on Della Duck. Thought I’d be a cool dad and get her some Della merch…but there doesn’t seem to be ANY! Boooooooooooooooooooo
One last promotional post about the final(?) incarnation of my piece on liminality in the films of Paul Thomas Anderson. If you can’t tell, I’m real proud of it. Should I make it a zine? cinemanerds.blogspot.com/2025/07/mago...
tfw you just bought Married to the Mob for the third time because it’s in 4k and has totally different extras from the ones on the awesome bluray you’re also still keeping…
Reminded that a few years ago I had a Zoolander theory confirmed by a like from Ben Stiller.
Since The Backrooms has everyone talking about Liminality and a lucky few of you out there have received your One Battle After Another steelbooks, I figured it was time to update my PTA masterwork to incorporate the film that won him three Oscars! cinemanerds.blogspot.com/2025/07/mago...
