This is Rock. I found it in a fen I was hiking in, and now it's my self-defense rock. My beau always sweetly asks me if I have Rock with me on big trips for safety.

A fist-sized rock with a rough textured surface. It's almost a perfect straight line on one side. I am terrible at being a nerd and did not identify what type of rock it is.

Context: In the movie, based on an HP Lovecraft story, Neill plays John Trent, an insurance investigator who visits a small town while looking into the disappearance of a successful author of horror novels, and begins to question his sanity as the lines between reality and fiction seem to blur.

Before this still, John Trent has been delivered by ambulance to an insane asylum, violently agitated and restrained. He is confined to a padded room, where he experiences disturbing hallucinations. The still comes from a scene where he is telling his story to a doctor.

I'm such a huge admirer of her art. Something that makes me so furious on her behalf, though? 406 years after Gentileschi painted the powerful "Judith Beheading Holofernes," in what we suspect is a response to Gentileschi being an SA survivor, our rape culture makes it more incisive than ever.

"Two women pin down a man on a bed. With one hand, Judith holds his head; with the other, she slices his throat with a long sword. The intensity of the scene is highlighted by the dripping blood soaking the white bed sheets and the man's eyes wide open — conscious, but helpless. Artemisia is more a champion of strong women rather than a woman obsessed with violence and revenge.

Gentileschi centers her work on the labor of the killing, which forces the gaze to start amid the tangle of blood, limbs, and metal. Her ability to display brutal realism is shown particularly in the details, such as the arc of carotid blood that spatters across the frame. This scene displays the use of chiaroscuro, or the drastic contrast between light and dark, both literally and figuratively.[3]

Holofernes struggles in vain to press against Abra as the two women force him down with distinctly strong arms.[4] Their sleeves are rolled up, as though they are performing an unavoidable domestic chore, and their faces express a staunch resolve. Judith drives the sword, which is noticeably vertical and shaped in a way that alludes to a cross, into flesh with an exertive force.[4] Abra is depicted as almost a mirror to Judith, with a youthful appearance that departs from earlier portrayals of her character.[4] She holds firm to the left arm of their victim as he pushes against her breast in desperation. Holofernes, whose blood puddles and spurts a deep red to contrast the white sheets of his deathbed, is overpowered and without hope.[5]"

That is too real! Jiji is generally good about letting me pick him up, but he's a big boy, so hauling him around in an emergency is going to be tricky. I've been thinking about doing some clicker training & maybe leash training to make it easier in case of emergency. He's an old man, so not sure.

We love to blame the people who take radical acts, because by condemning them we forgive ourselves for our comparative lack of action. Conspiracy thinking, in these cases, is a way of abdicating moral responsibility. Conspiracists are not just forgiving themselves for not taking action, they’re forgiving themselves for being too cowardly to say “who can blame the guy?” when someone tries for a wild hail mary of an arson (or assassination).

We need only to judge actions by two criteria: was it morally justifiable and was it strategic? If an action is morally justifiable, we ought not condemn it. If it was morally justifiable but not strategic, we ought to neither condemn it nor celebrate it. (And you can’t judge something’s strategic value based on whether or not it succeeded, but rather on whether or not it was the best chance available.)

But we can’t look to others (and you can’t look to me) to answer questions of morality or strategy for you.
