(2/2) I have so many thoughts on this game, I have to split them into 3 images to stay within Bluesky's alt text limit lmao. Most of my thoughts are good!! I would say more about the story and characters here, but I don't want to spoil anything and would need a whole new thread to contain my yapping

Fire Emblem: Bound Destiny reminded me of a fan fiction I read half a lifetime ago, an epic about a human who gets transformed into a Lucario and thrust into a war between humans and Pokemon. I'm not suggesting BD was in any way inspired by that fic, but I wouldn't be surprised if Cobalt, the hack's author, also grew up reading (or even writing) that kind of story. Bound Destiny made me Feel Things and got me Thinking about it in the same way that old fan fiction did. The story is gripping and beautifully written; the characters are three-dimensional, and each one speaks with a unique voice. Also, yes, there are gay foxes, and they're really cute, and I might have to draw fanart of them sometime.

But the other work I was reminded of while playing through Bound Destiny was Mirror's Edge, a game for the most part about smoothly parkouring your way around a city. At its best, the environments themselves were engaging puzzles to be solved by using your movement abilities to traverse them. It was also periodically interrupted by a bunch of guys showing up to shoot at you and make playing the game miserable for a bit. Bound Destiny kinda felt like that sometimes, too.

Unlike Mirror's Edge, this isn't the fault of the game, but of myself. In short, what keeps me from unreservedly loving the Fire Emblem romhack called Bound Destiny is that it's a Fire Emblem romhack. It's designed for the overlap between Fire Emblem fans and Pokemon fans, and I'm only the latter. I think that, on average, the kind of person who seeks out, installs, and plays Fire Emblem romhacks does probably enjoy FE games. But me? When someone refers to a Fire Emblem game by its number I have no idea what game they're talking about. I played a few hours of Sacred Stones and Radiant Dawn, but the only FE I've ever finished was Awakening, thanks to its No-Permadeath Mode for Babies. As a result, despite having its own no-permadeath mode, and despite assurances that this is fairly easy as far as FE games go (and the easiest in the trilogy), Bound Destiny was a pretty hard game for me! Many maps took me several tries to clear, and the late-game maps took me like two hours each. The GBA soft reset code is practically muscle memory at this point.

My understanding is that the design goal for FE, and other strategy games, is for the player to feel like a master strategist overcoming impossible odds with their tactical genius. And I did have a few moments of "Oh, so *that's* why people play these games." But more often the feeling Bound Destiny's gameplay gave me was, "God there's so many fucking guys everywhere! And Jesus Christ, MORE just showed up?? What the fuck, how am I supposed to DO this!?" Maybe there's some class FE fans took that teaches you how to be good at these games, or maybe you learn by playing enough of them, or maybe my brain is just too smooth for this shit. In any case I did, eventually, win every mission so I could get to the part I liked, which is to say the story. But I have to assume that if you're a Fire Emblem fan, the strategy RPG *is* The Good Part, rather than the vegetables you have to eat before you can have your dessert.

Now, there's an argument to be made that you can't make a meal out of only dessert. It's not lost on me that struggling alongside the characters gets you to empathize with them and appreciate their moments of peace more. The mechanical roles they take in battle, how their abilities interact with one another, and how you choose to develop and use them all *show* you what dialogue can only *tell* you. In a sense, Bound Destiny's gameplay *is* its story, each map a narrative of unexpected setbacks and improbable triumphs, of characters supporting each other in a fight for their lives and ideals. It's not just something you read, it's something you do, something you *earn*.

...But knowing all that doesn't always make it fun for me to play!! The tactical gameplay is good! There's nothing *wrong* with it! I just often didn't *like* it. Though to its credit, BD is pitched to fans of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and being one myself, I felt right at home having a great story but gameplay I kinda had to drag myself through.

All this is to say, I very much enjoyed Bound Destiny, and I'm looking forward to playing through the rest of the trilogy, but I'm not exactly its target audience. Chuji's offered me a version of Bound Destiny 2 he put together which practically trivializes the game's combat, and has offered to make a similar edit for BD3. I will happily take him up on this, because one game's worth of Fire Emblem gameplay is more than enough for me, and again, I'm told this is the *easiest* of the three. But if you *are* this game's target audience, you should play it right now, and if you also love having feelings about fictional creatures but suck at strategy games, maybe play it on Easy or just watch the cutscenes on Youtube or something.

Find Mii: All hats collected. It's not very good, but back in the day this was all we had and we *liked* it, god damn it.

Find Mii II: All hats collected. It really is just Find Mii: The Second One.

Mii Force: All Plaza Tickets collected. A pretty competent shmup, though it's funny how some weapons are useless and some are absolutely busted. I can't believe there's 20 levels and you need 80 level clears to get all the titles for a ticket.

Flower Town: All Plaza Tickets collected, all jobs completed perfectly, all flowers grown in all colors. An actually relaxing game, especially when you can always get 10 people at a time. With how much Bullshit some of these games put you through, it's refreshing to have one that's fairly simple to 100%.

Warrior's Way: All Plaza Tickets collected. Why does this exist lol. It's literally rock paper scissors lmao. I paid real money for rock paper scissors

Monster Manor: All Plaza Tickets collected. Probably my favorite of these games, though most of the fun for me was fiddling with room placement and weapon upgrading. The actual RPG part is kind of just okay.

Ultimate Angler: All Plaza Tickets collected, all fish (but 1!!!) caught at A+ size, all missions completed. I think this is my favorite fishing in a video game that I've played...not that I seek out games with fishing. But having every fish only be attracted to a couple of the randomly available types of bait, and having some fish only even be present like 1 or 2% of the time, AND making some of those fish take 2 or 3 rounds to fish up even with 10 people and a God Rod? *AND* explicitly challenging you to catch every fish in A+ size, which is also like a single-digit percent chance? It's TOO MUCH.

Battleground Z: All Plaza Tickets collected. It's a decent top-down beat-'em-up, I guess. I absolutely could not be bothered to do all the missions, though.

Slot Car Rivals: All missions accomplished; Rank S99 achieved (not worth it lol). You know Kirby's Air Grind, the minigame from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land? This is basically that. It's decently fun!

Market Crashers: All merchandise collected. A fun "mash button make number go up" game. I'm pretty sure this is exactly how the real stock market works.

Feed Mii: Cookbook 100% completed. A cute concept and pretty well executed. Experimenting with ingredients can be kind of a nightmare, since how they translated some dishes to the limited ingredient list doesn't make sense, but at least you can just look up the recipe for everything online.

Ninja Launcher: Completed the first quest. It's fine but there really isn't much to it.

Mii Trek: Finished once and forgotten immediately.
