A great independent bookstore in the neighborhood near the Obama Presidential Center is offering a 10% discount if you have a ticket for the OPC that day. The 57th Street store is near some good lunch restaurants. The Seminary Co-op branch is next to a coffee shop and Wright's Robie House
For some reason some year I saved these photos on July 9 so I thought I’d share. First is the 63rd Street “L” going over Stony to the transportation hub in 1893. Then top, how it ended at Stony with a trolley. Bottom, the planned modern hub in I think 1963. Greyhound had a terminal @ 63rd.
Toni is the Statue of LIberty, Barbara Flynn Currie was Uncle Sam, Alderwoman Hairston was I guess Betsy Ross, Barack Obama when he was our state senator was a Minuteman. Now, it's just Toni and new people probably think she's being eccentric. lol Here's an old image
Come to the parade and festival in Hyde Park #Chicago today! Parade at 11. Decorate your bikes and be part of it! Marchers organize behind the Hyde Park Bank Building. OPC is having events in the afternoon too. And is restreaming the opening ceremony to remind us what the 4th is actually about.
I thought I’d point out some of the free and lovely parts of Obama Presidential Center others haven’t so much. I really liked the approach from the south end through the native wetland walk. Richard Hunt and Maya Lin statues. And the many nooks for just hanging out there.
It's on the north east side of the tower at the Obama Presidential Center. It's very close to the actual launch of the race, which was described as 60th Street and a block or more east of the Illinois Central tracks.

It’s along the paved way that’s supposed to be bike lanes connecting over the Darrow Bridge to the Lakefront Trail on the east side of the OPC. Just where it’s supposed to be.
I bet they don't have killing buffalo as part of the festivities. Just bumped into this about the parade.
It was the workaround--"expanding" Grant Park and providing land for the ICRR terminal to be East of Michigan Avenue (controlled by the SPC).

My knee is messed up so I felt so happy to see my bus then so unhappy when it just whizzed right past me. Walking around the neighborhood also means a lot of detours today. Tom Skilling said it was a derecho.

I wonder what makes this Lincoln salad. Was he a fan? I do know that oyster houses were big in Chicago in the 19th century. (in case this floats free of context, these are from a 1903 cookbook for Hyde Park #Chicago)
Huh, this 1903 cookbook from the #Chicago Hyde Park Baptist Church ladies has a pie crust and pancake recipe for Dyspeptics that substitutes almond flour for pastry flour or almond paste for lard/butter. It sounds like early recognition that wheat might have been causing problems for some people.
Oh, and you can have your coffee and Chicago muffin with an omelet. Soak bread crumbs in hot milk, beat whites of four eggs to a stiff froth, mix the bread with all the milk it will absorb, no more, into a paste, add the yolks with a little salt. Put into a very hot pan. Set the top in the oven.
Mix dry ingredients. Beat egg and add to the milk; beat to a good batter with the other ingredients; add butter (melted) and bake in a quick oven. Mrs. C. H. Burton. You can have your Chicago muffins with coffee. Details are in the alt text. 2/n
The Library of Congress has a copy of the 1903 Cookbook from the Hyde Park #Chicago Baptist Church. Here is the recipe for Chicago Muffins: Two scant cups flour, one cup sweet milk, two teaspoons baking powder, one egg, butter half the size of an egg, two tablespoons sugar, pinch of salt. 1/n

Before the Hyde Park Garden Fair started. The Native Plant department sold 85% by 5 pm on Saturday. Thank you! All the departments did well. We don’t have a way to restock but the annuals and vegetables and herbs got a new delivery last night.
