$The first part of a flash fiction story: THE FAIRY RETURNED THE CHILD EXACTLY AS PROMISED by Polly Liticat “An eye-blink, no more,” the creature in the silvered wood said. “And then returned unchanged.” Thomas calculated furiously. A blink _there_ might be a week _here_, a fortnight. No more. “Not a resting of the eyes?” he ventured. “Dost accuse us of trickery?” Its voice was colder than arctic snow. “A blink. Thus.” The terrible green eyes shuttered, and opened again immediately. Thomas nodded. “All right.” Its head inclined a fraction. “The deal is—” “Wait!” Thomas thought he’d spotted the loophole. “Returned exactly from whence he was taken!” It smiled. Thomas thought it an acknowledgment of his acumen. “Of course. The deal is struck.” In the morning, Wendy called, just as the creature had promised, while he lingered over his cappuccino. She’d been thinking of him, she said. She hoped they could put it all behind them, the divorce, the custody battle. He had to test her, of course. “You just want to see Tom Jr.” “Of course a mother wants her son to see!” She didn’t sound like her old self, but Thomas didn’t think he minded much. “But it is your good regard I most dearly crave.” “I shall again be your lord and master.” “My lord and master,” she repeated. “I shall deny you nothing.” No, he didn’t mind the change in her at all. There were lies to maintain, of course. He told the school he’d enrolled Tom Jr in a private academy, and well, he might’ve done, if wasn’t such a swindle. To Wendy he said the boy’d been there a year, already, and had many fast friends. But he’d have a weekend home soon, and might well choose to stay, now that the family was reunited. He hoped the boy would see the wisdom of holding his tongue, but where reason failed, there was always the strap.$

But as a fortnight passed, and another, and another, Wendy grew less and less and less agreeable. More eager to see the boy, less eager to please him. So when the moon next swelled, Thomas went back to the wood, and did again what was requisite.
The creature’s eyes were colder now than its voice had been before. “We are quits, mortal man. We returned you your son, unchanged, as sworn, a good few eye-blinks past.”
“You did not.”
“Dost say we lie?” Now the voice was colder still than the eyes.
“Where is he then?” Thomas was reckless. “He never came back to the bed from which you took him.”
“There he is.” A pallid, taloned finger pointed up through the trees. “Do you not see him? Not abed, but exactly from whence he was taken.”
It took a long moment for Thomas to understand. An eye-blink of Earth whirling round the sun, of the sun describing its own arc, an eye-blink even of the unknowable stretching of the cosmos itself.
“Your stipulation,” the creature reminded him. “We cannot be blamed if you did not prepare for your son’s return.”
“But I meant—”
“What you meant, you should have said,” it said, and then it was gone.
Thomas fell to the ground and wailed and pounded his useless fists against the loam. And when the silver faded from the wood and dawn light reached for the trees, he drew off his belt, and looped it round a stout, low branch. And then he did what was requisite.

It was a good environment for reflecting, and Koosa was very surprised by the reflection he arrived at.
He wasn’t happy. Or, at least, not nearly as happy as he thought he was, or should be.
It was hard to understand. He was enjoying multiple orgasms every day, and usually inspiring several more. He had an apartment full of beautiful, expensive things. But it seemed, somehow, that something was missing, and he had no idea what it could be.

Hi #WIPSnips I added a “corner” to this manuscript just this morning! This is a spicy Achillean thruple romantic portal fantasy, and Koosa’s world is very different from what Izatozz is used to. It has corners for one thing, and rectangles everywhere.

An excerpt from a manuscript reads: Koosa led Izatozz around a corner. He couldn’t fathom how Koosa oriented himself; everything seemed identical. Squarish buildings of similar size, laid out in a rectangular grid. Orderly, yet undifferentiated, except for the colors: bright but soft, like a field of wildflowers seen through mist. Plenty enough light to appreciate the shape of a man’s torso as it jutted up from the form, to judge the curve of shoulder and back, but perhaps not enough to clearly mark a face. Sometimes Cerion craved a lithe, muscular body, sometimes he delighted in thicker, heavier flesh. A man might sidle up to him, or he might draw near a man, perhaps a little younger, or not. The conversations at Reychaud’s were always held a little above a whisper, husky and anonymous, nearly lost in the lap of the water.
“D’you fancy me?”
They’d both size each other up. Sometimes the answer was “no.” A bold man might reach below the bubbling water to grope for a cock before he answered. “I do, yeah. Shall we find a third?”

"An invasion?"
"More of a reconnaissance," she clarified.
"I think my border defenses are weak," I mumbled, and then her lips brushed mine.
She was tentative, giving me room to pull back. I wasn't. I mounted an immediate counter offense, tugging her lower lip between mine, teasing with my tongue tip. She kissed me back, matching my fervor, nip for nip and stroke for stroke.
Some part of me was dimly aware that she was also fresher and mintier than our dinner would have left her, and that she was likely having the same revelation.
This was a premeditated act on both our parts.
