Like I think we've mystified growing food a little bit too much when it seems so self evidently impossible to people who have never tried it

reply to a post: lol thank you. as a person who doesn't do any of this, i don't want to spout off about things i don't understand, but i feel like i understand enough to know that there's just no way anybody in a non-actual-farm setting is meaningfully replacing their bought food with grown food

OP: couldn’t not speak on this, love when special interests of hating and gardening align
my parents have been gardening on an acre my whole life and have never not supplemented with grocery store produce!! there is no way she is pulling any meaningful harvests from an apartment patio balcony

replier again: yeah exactly, there's just no way that the kind of people who talk about 'growing your own food' as a solution to (any number of problems) actually have the time or knowledge to do it, and there's definitely no way that someone who by her own admission has 17 hours of screentime a day is doing it.

Three more replies from Alderman: Yeah, I'm somehow not worried about it with a writer of her calibre. It sounds like she's just doing some thinking out loud in a way that she gets a response. A bit like talking to a pet. I just don't think that ChatGPT could possibly write one of her novels.

I mean, maybe I'm wrong, and her next book will be a pile of derivative rubbish, and everything will be "not just this but that". But I'm very open to the idea that a literal genius can find useful ways to not destroy her process with an A.I. tool.

I may be more sympathetic because, as far as I know, she's the only other literary novelist in the world to also have some ownership of a games company? Which makes me suspect that she is more sophisticated re tech than the average literary author.

best books I read last year were braiding sweetgrass, my good bright wolf, detransition baby and stag dance. I also really enjoyed absolution and intermezzo.
