As for a game I would ABSOLUTELY recommend for newbies getting into these old games....it'd be this. Very easy to pick up and play, pretty easy to get the hang of, a pretty easy 1CC to get...only issue is no 1-Ups, so there will be quite a bit of practice involved.

Main reason why I always loved the simplicity of a good shmup fighter. Most of em can be broken down into some really simple silhouettes and are easily recognizable!
