There's a lot of ribbing on baby boomer yuppie culture in those first seasons that goes over your head when you watch it as a kid. You're invested in the babies sneaking into the neighbor's yard to get their ball back, the panning shot of all of the Pickles' health food items is lost on you.
Something Rugrats lost as it got more popular was a lot of its Simpsons-level satire and absolutely bonkers concepts. Like, it's easy to forget that the Rugrats universe has consumer-level time machines and Tommy and Chucky once sent a robot gorilla into the past.
