An album where the mixing board is very clearly an instrument. It took me awhile to “get it,” but this is such a rich, textured work. Perfect for twilight.
Getting to see this band perform on reunion tour was an experience I’ll never forget. So so good. Album makes me want to get punched in the face, in a good way.
I have a soft spot for Nick Cave’s occasionally overwrought artistic voice — probably teen nostalgia playing this driving to and from the SOS a bajillion times for a job.
My dad was a huge Bob Marley fan, so I heard Exodus and other classics quite frequently as a kid. I find I listen to the Congos more often though — I love Scratch Perry’s dustier recording and mastering practices.
Cornerstone of house music, absolutely essential. So much of what I listen to today would not be possible if this were never made.
Great undersung jazz album — I feel like a lot of people my age came up knowing mostly spiritual jazz folks like Alice Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders via reissues, but I have found myself more drawn to stuff that maintains a bit of bebop convention lately.

More recent 80s fixation has been on David Sylvian — he has made sooooo many good albums and has a very unique lyrical style. But I love his debut most of all.
I came around to Grace Jones late but I listen to this album quite frequently. Singular mix of new wave, reggae, and pop music conventions.
Bandcamp really was a game changer for coming across projects that would have otherwise never entered my orbit in college. This is from an improvisational Polish project Innercity Ensemble. Scuzzy, eclectic, psychedelic.
I’ve long loved Hyperdub — definitely used that Burial album cover mural as an online avatar, in true dweeb fashion — but Pull My Hair Back was such a memorable midpoint between the electronic stuff i already liked and pop music writing.
Iceage really opened the door to punk music for me before I moved away from my hometown. I had listened to stuff that was sort of one foot in like Sacred Bones’ The Men, but this was unrestrained in a way I had never appreciated before, and presaged my affinity for Shellac and Drive Like Jehu.
I got a lot of exposure to electronic music through a sibling (and Toonami), especially Flying Lotus and Brainfeeder. I really latched onto this one because I’d never heard an album that felt both lush and weathered the way this one did.
Girls was also good for that itch. Starting the album with “Oh I wish I had a boyfriend” was an immediate winner for a closeted gay guy at Catholic school. Frequently summer driving soundtrack.
Grizzly Bear’s Veckatemist made a splash when I was a teenager, but I was really blown away when i listened to Yellow House for the first time. It scratched the moody teenager itch when i was still figuring myself out.
