This is how fetal personhood laws and abortion bans go hand in hand. They are used to arrest and punish pregnant people and take away bodily autonomy - whether they give birth, have an abortion, or lose their pregnancy.
Did you catch us on “Last Week Tonight @lastweektonight.com with John Oliver?” We worked with the team on their research into fetal personhood and so much of what we do: our cases, our analysis, and explaining the real threat to pregnant people. Help us push the message by sharing!
It’s been a busy year! We analyzed over 730 bills from across the country to identify trends that could attack the rights of pregnant people and those that protect them. Read our 2025-2026 Legislative Sessions in Review⬇️ www.pregnancyjusticeus.org/wp-content/u...
Black August remembers key figures in the Black liberation movement. It’s a time of reflection and deep study of Black political thought from freedom fighters. Here are some books to add to your reading lists!

Alexee needed medical care after experiencing a pregnancy loss. Instead, her life was left hanging in the balance as medical staff and police coldly accused her of being a murderer. This is a powerful win, not only for Alexee, but for anyone whose pregnancy loss is turned into a criminal event.
Join us on September 30 to celebrate 25 years of Pregnancy Justice and recognize Lauren Smith, an advocate and mother of three from South Carolina, who courageously fought her case for 6 years, refusing to back down. Gala tickets and sponsorships are available now at pjgala2026.funraise.org.
The mothers of Black newborns are reported to police for alleged substance use during pregnancy around 2.5 times more often than those of white babies. No one should be unnecessarily investigated, punished, and separated from their newborns by the family policing system.
Thanks to Act 292, “The Unborn Child Protection Act,” Wisconsin is one of the most punitive states in the country for pregnant people who test positive for substances. Fetal personhood laws such as these are harmful for anyone who can get pregnant.
We’re hiring a Major Gifts Officer! This role will lead major gifts fundraising and donor engagement to strengthen long-term support for Pregnancy Justice. We’re so excited to start hearing from you! Apply here: nrgconsultinggroup.applytojob.com/apply/yo6plq...

The policing of medical cannabis for pregnant women in Alabama is highly invasive. Policies that simply don't exist for other medical conditions are forced on pregnant people. Where you live should not change how you’re treated during pregnancy.
Post-Dobbs, the masks are off, and the anti-abortion and prenatal personhood movement is more aggressive than ever. Last year, we saw 15 bills introduced that would criminalize women for seeking abortions. This year, at least 12 were introduced or carried over.

4 years ago today, the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade. Since then, pregnancy criminalization has reached new heights. But reproductive justice does not begin or end with Roe, and the criminalization of pregnancy is far from new. Pregnant people deserve a world with dignity and autonomy.
We’re hiring! We’re looking for a Development Associate and a Paralegal to join the team. Our Development Associate will support fundraising efforts and our Paralegal will work to support our litigation team. Share this post and apply with the link below! 😁 www.pregnancyjusticeus.org/careers/
We’re beyond furious that the Maternal Health, Dignity, & Consent Act didn’t make it through the Assembly, but the way we activated was nothing short of incredible. And the passage of the bill in the New York Senate was HISTORIC! Thank you to all of you who showed up to protect pregnant New Yorkers!

Since last year, New Mexico’s unconstitutional directive has been separating mothers from newborns. We filed a brief before the New Mexico Supreme Court in support of @aclunm.bsky.social's legal case to challenge this harmful measure. A drug test isn’t a parenting test.

No pregnant woman should have to endure the sick and horrifying treatment that Ms. McElroy did. The law requires humane treatment and access to necessary care, yet those basic protections were denied. Our lawsuit seeks accountability for this inexcusable inaction. We are proud to stand with her.
