Aliaksandr Milinkevich dedicated his life to the fight for democracy in Belarus. All of us at @europarl.europa.eu are deeply saddened by his passing. The 2006 Sakharov Prize laureate was forced into exile, but he never gave up on his country or his vision of a free Belarusian society.

Belarus will be free.  Six years after people stood up for a new future, their voices have not been silenced. Europe stands with them, and will keep pushing for a Belarus where liberty, media freedom and the will of its people prevail.

94-year-old Jan Antoni Witkowski is a European hero. 82 years ago, he joined his father in the Warsaw Uprising to fight for freedom and human dignity. Today, we honour Jan, all those who survived, and all those who gave their lives. Their story is Europe's story.

Magistrate Paolo Borsellino embodied the values on which Europe is built: courage, integrity & freedom. He knew the risks of confronting the Mafia, yet he never turned away from his duty. 34 years from his assassination, we honour his memory by choosing, everyday, to stand on the side of justice.
