My father in law showed me some right wing BS meme about solar panels absorbing tons of heat that they'd lead to global warming. It was such a ridiculous claim that finding studies to refute it was hard. In the end I went with a paper from 2006 showing just how little albedo matters comparatively.
At this cost why not go to 99.4% there? Ember models this as costing $167/MWh, but with $19/kWh sodium that could be $55/MWh! This isn't free but it undercuts basically every form of fossil generation. It flips the math from overbuilding solar to overbuilding batteries. A true game changer.
200% is actually the low end of efficiency, when it's cold out. This is called a COP of 2.0. When it's warmer they can have efficiencies over 500%! This is possible because they're moving heat rather than generating it (thermodynamics shows that generating heat can't hit 100%). Here's an example:
Back then I had elaborate thoughts on how to end Chegg cheating and had an idea to spread them far and wide and buy puts on Chegg stock. Turns out I should have just bought the puts without putting in any effort (in true Chegg form). LLMs destroyed the cheating company by making it easier to cheat.
If you want to stick with Chevy the Silverado EV can also make the trip without fast charging (and you can find used Silverados around $40k). It gets a far less efficient kWh/mile but by avoiding fast charging it could be cheaper $/mile. Mercedes EQS also very close to making it without charging.
Seems like you did a good job trusting ABRP and just had a challenge of driving through a desert (of both sand and good chargers). It's interesting to put other EVs into ABRP and see how they handle that trip. (Add a bit of charging time to each cause of the slow charger there)

Yes, though as far as I know the only company they do V2H with is Wallbox and you have to sign up to a wait-list. Given the performance of Wallbox's stock in past years I'm leery of this reaching mass deployment. Do you know of any other V2H partner that works with EV9?
Silverados have 204 kWh of usable battery and are ~$40k used. Add $10k to install the V2H charger and it's still less than installing 4 13.5 kWh Tesla power walls, plus you get a truck and a solar inverter for free. Serious money but could be totally off grid. Drive it to a DCFC if you ever run low.
Yeah, what you're experiencing now reminds me of when I lived in Arizona. Over the summer we'd go for multiple weeks where it was so hot at night you'd never want to open a window. Tempe's low tonight is 31 C, and it won't go below 23 C over the next 10 day forecast. Thermal mass doesn't help that.

Alan Moore thought about this 40 years ago. His answer had some downsides.
The biggest issue is for people making <$30k. That seems like a combination of too low a min wage and too little housing (as low cost housing is upgraded and rented to higher earners for more profit).
Homelessness also popped up in 2024 (likely due to the ending of COVID relief). The crazy thing is it's still under 1M with <250k people unhoused. This makes more sense when we live in a fantasy where no one in the US has any money, but the reality is we have $$ to build 250k units of basic housing.
The paper NPR linked to in that article does have many useful stats. The number of cost burdened rental households is increasing, but in 2024 it was ~12M paying 30-50% of their income in rent and another ~12M paying over 50%. That's ~24M too many, but still only like 7% of the total US population.
And it is possible to get electricity for well under $0.15/kWh. I expect my rooftop solar will avg $0.07-0.08/kWh over its lifetime. In many states you can get electric rates with cheap night time charging. In Texas they actually have plans with free nights and weekends, so EVs can refuel for $0!!!
The 2.7C issue is that most graphs for it end in 2100, but we're still warming then and seas are still rising (SSP2-4.5). If you want your 2100+ descendants to live good lives there's still strong climate urgency. Also, AMOC collapse is WAY more likely than we thought. e360.yale.edu/features/amo...
It really seems like your main issue is the HOA keeping you from affordable charging, but you keep returning to saying you can't afford an EV. Unless you go the "buy a broken gas car and constantly DIY fix it" route, or drive vanishingly few miles a used EV will have the cheapest total cost (TCO).
This is a cool tool, but I think their overall climate risk visualization is underrating wildfire risk. Like pretty much the whole West (outside of a small area in the Pacific Northwest) is deep red, but lots of that is considered low risk.
