This is chastising. You think people don’t know what’s happening? So you condescend to the people with ‘i’m afraid you need to realize.’ Sorry, that’s offensive. You’re not just asking an innocent question, you’re lecturing people about their oppression.
Haven’t looked into the model, but this is compatible with what I said earlier. But the gap between model prediction and outcome does t really come with an explanation here. Could just as well be explained by US overperformance vs weak teams and Belgian underperformance in the cup to that point.

There’s a lot of bad stuff in football that comes from social media, but one good thing is you realize that a lot of the players are just genuinely and often charmingly weird dudes.
FIFA's vision for football =/= 'America's' vision. In fact, have a look at FIFA's 'clean stadium' policy, which requires all stadium and product logos for companies who aren't official FIFA sponsors to be covered. 'Hydration breaks' are FIFA's idea, taking advantage of Trump-controlled media.
On the left is an American football shirt (my home city). On the right is a Premier League club's football shirt. If you've never clocked the difference but are complaining about 'Americanisation' of football, maybe time to rethink your thesis.
