i have always
coveted sea birds,
never imprisoned,
free to fly as far as
their wings might carry them,
gliding on the breezes,
soaring toward the sun,
higher in the sky -
sunblind, tears flowing,
forsaking all,
letting momentum
transition me unto flame.

-
remnants of Eden,
this valley of shadows.
i am swathed
in lilies, still wet
with their final tears.
my path upward,
paved in skulls
and good intentions,
yet escape eludes me.
a relentless headwind
pushes this Sisyphus
back into its depths
where nothing awaits.

as life’s lights
fade to black
and our final act is played,
we depart the stage,
absent either sound or fury,
absent both fanfare and applause,
a solitary performer
alone in darkness,
echoes of a last soliloquy,
swallowed by the silence
that eagerly listens.

-
it’s difficult to resolve,
through the clinging haze,
where the swan road ended
and the lake began.
but in the end,
or so we say,
light conquers darkness,
shadows fade.
we stand knee-deep
in black feathers,
damp with beaded dew,
wondering how we lost our way.

-
i run the wineglass
back and forth
along my lips
sip
warm and sacramental
hold it in my mouth
swallow
slow
patient for the morning
when the night
is so impertinent
and full.

-
a slow stroll through
a raindark Sunday graveyard,
your stone has grown mossy,
but your face is etched clear -
that sour expression
and that piercing glare.
i stand before you
stripped down bare,
unabashed by your eyes,
and their crow-like laughter.

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 12 -
our love is electric,
eclectically clad to protect
us from the dangers
of reverse polarity.
but i prefer to let it flow,
dangerous and out of control,
steeped in magnetism,
my aura made aurora ,
filling the night skies
in lavender and green.

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 11 -
i have sailed
these archipelagos of the heart
long before time
had found its name -
when stars
still burned bright,
like beacons in the abyss,
and tender winds whispered, seek.
each bay a haven,
where love lingered,
mooring me deep
in her fervent embrace.

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 10 -
the garden has spoiled
since we parted
those many years ago.
i rock in the chair
grown from cedar groves
in the valley below,
now shrouded
in sunset mists.
softly i hum
“Red is the Rose”
wishing my wilted heart
might recall
a fairer spring.

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 9 -
curled up with Keats -
“la belle dame sans merci”
lost in between
abandonment
and the obsequies of love
captured by faeries
to lie in her meadow
if only but for the length
of a dream
fall asleep
gently
windowside
while outside frolic
a nightmare of fireflies

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 8 -
after green,
there was only gray.
clouds pressed birds
from the sky
to collect and die
among the cinder fields,
songless and dry.
trees stripped bare,
all blanched branch
and brokenness,
save for the small defiance
of one leaf,
seeking the light
once more.

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 7 -
i have always
been afraid of lions,
especially Aslan.
as a child i wondered,
after reading Lewis,
if that made me evil
knowing
the back of the wardrobe
was simply made of wood,
revealing
no path to Narnia
there among the mothballs.

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 6 -
awoken
to the scent of jasmine
grown lush below
the open window.
a hummingbird
thrums by busily,
incurious,
i recall tenderly
the plush of your lips,
how your hips
responded so eagerly
to mine.

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 5 -
leaves ebb & flow
under the earnest caress
of a following breeze
night vision matters less
when guided by
a steady hand
silence minds its manners
permits the meadow
to be as it will be
a blushing dawn swoons
for the sunlight
flushed in the tender
ache of touch

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 4 -
the sunrise meadow
comes to life
sweating off the night,
dew evaporating
in larksong, longing,
preening in
her ache to be seen.
echoes of the mockingbird,
borrowing every note,
all the while
the supercilious bluejay
screeching as though
she's owed the morning.

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 3 -
color stopped
believing in countries
red leaked west
black crossed every treaty
white came late
with clean bandages
stunning,
how freedom
scatters
then calls the wound
movement
when nothing here
moves
except those colors
far beneath closure.

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 2 -
a life
assessed by
a balance sheet
what he owed
what he saved
never the man
never a father
a car
a house
never his laughter
never his hugs
the final appraisal
arrived far less
than expected
a home full
of rooms that remembered
him,
sold
to the highest bidder

PS Conway@psconway· Jul 1 -
singularities like me
were designed to wander
these urban streets.
loneliness
is a state of being
i had come to accept.
until you lured me,
coaxed me from my path,
into your orbit,
an event horizon
of apprehension,
past which my light
can never return.

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 30 -
we used to dress
our wounds
with wildflowers
i thought it was healing
when injuries
could look so pretty
you coaxed me
to breathe deeper,
trust the fragrance,
but by morning,
infection had set in
scented and dank
the bandages had bloomed
too florid
to ignore

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 29 -
love’s tenderness courses away,
only an iron stench
of blood and flesh
remains.
my strength ebbs
in the twilight,
only the stains of ichor
my prize.
lie down among the carrion
where dirt keeps
its cold,
cover my eyes with pebbles,
wait for the crows
to claim me.

#poetry #vss365

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 28 -
your ghost keeps leaving
wet footprints
across my kitchen floor.
i mop.
i pray.
i salt the threshold.
still, midnight arrives
with your jangling chains,
barefoot and
dripping,
disgruntled as ever.
sorry you’re dead,
but next time wipe your feet.

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 27 -
everything itches
i’m addicted to you…
need another taste.
i crave your essence
coursing through my veins,
your crack house heat,
sordid and cheap,
your cruel tease,
peeling paint from
my purposeless walls,
skin crawling
with flea bites
everything itches
-
#poetry #vss365

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 26 -
i smell summer apricots
on the breeze,
oleander blooms
at the foot of your tower,
your lengths
of pale braided hair
lie piled there, too.
and i stare upward,
a villain denied his prize,
aware that i am
more prisoner than you.

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 25 -
you once said permanence
was a myth we inherited
from poets and undertakers.
i winced,
counting each grain of wood
that formed your coffin
like the constellations
you named Cassiopeia
over and again
ready to retrace
all our forgotten tomorrows.

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 24 -
no more scapegoats,
i refuse to accept
these false choices.
love is never binary,
even when crucified,
i have still found it there,
buried beneath juniper.
so today,
i swat away
the incessant pull of destiny
and cast my lots
with you.

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 23 -
the end of all things
was never reserved
for Mordor alone.
the earth around us quakes.
and i mistake love
for something more basic –
an ache,
a lurch in the heart,
greeting the new morning
prepared to start again,
absent you,
sifting through the rubble.
-

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 22 -
i kept your last words
on the sill for years,
small, wingless things
pretending they were birds.
tonight,
i opened the window
and watched my old hurt
defenestrate itself
into the rain,
staining the sidewalk black
below.

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 21 -
love can be so confusing
to a disordered mind,
and i am stuck in a kitchen
without cupboards.
cookie-scented fevers
clatch hold of my brain
in batches
and i never can tell
if i am really hungry,
or if i am simply allergic
to your ingredients.
-
#poetry #vss365

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 20 -
another blameless, aimless
sunrise washes across your face
you are tasting something
in your dreams, smiling,
making little
mouth sounds
making me hungry for
breakfast, hungry for you,
best to go putter in the kitchen,
pour two cups of coffee.

PS Conway@psconway· Jun 19 -
voices drift like smoke
along the moor,
neither this way nor that,
but i know
wickedness has come,
the laughter of crows,
derision unseen,
unclean shivers rise,
your whispered spells
that seek to undo me,
bind me in peat to your will,
feathered in black.
