That time I joined a friend for a summertime rooftop movie at Marina City. I can't remember what movie we watched, probably because it was so cold out we were hunkered down and shivering under heavy blankets despite it being late July.
West Nile Virus is off to an early start this year. We've had a few suspected cases, but this beautiful crow fledgling is showing all the signs. He was flying around healthy until he was found lounging in the road today. Thankfully his human neighbors love crows and have been keeping him safe. ❤️🩹
This is now officially my iron infusion shirt. Appropriate time of year for it, too. 😆
Speaking of! I just spoke to the kind folks who called in this adorable crow kiddo. All signs point to a healthy crow kid, so we're taking a wait-and-see approach. The crow parents are still around, and baby is exploring the yard and pecking at food sources. 🖤
Unexpected goose rescue!!! I was parched and achy after some bird watching but decided to walk an extra few blocks to check on a nearby rooftop goose family, and the babies hatched this afternoon!! 🐣🐣🐣
I had to rush over, so the bird check will have to happen after, but I did snag this photo from the elevator lobby on my way in. 💚 Chicago
Shout out to nurse practitioners! I met with an APRN CNP today, and it was one of the most validating + informative healthcare visits I've ever had. The difference between NPs & MDs has been stark IME. Anyway, this was the view from the elevators. I also bumped into a pair of crows on my way in. 🐦⬛
Nearly two hours of searching, and I could only find the healthy crow family members. 🐦⬛ I coincidentally stumbled on this sick/injured mourning dove, so she's (?) now on her way to rehab. ❤️🩹
Ha! Accurate. 🐦⬛ So that's White Feather perched next to Mama Crow in my tree. Their fledgies, Shy Crow and Runt Crow, are partly visible perched directly above them. Even without unique markings, crow personalities are distinct enough that I can usually identify them from our interactions. 🖤
Crow butt! 🐦⬛ Apologies for the terrible quality. I took this photo of one of my wild crow buddies on an iPhone 4 on a gloomy, rainy day many years ago. It was my first ever (accidental) bird butt photo and cracked me up. #BirdOfTheDay #BirdButts
Revolution(s) was pretty great. I’d recommend it and go again if that hadn’t been their final performance last night.
With alt text, because I had somehow forgotten about this, and it’s important:
My fellow bird rescue volunteers helped a pair of bald eagles yesterday! This is a screen shot from a video of them on the ground with their feet locked together. These silly rabbits are thankfully both okay, if a bit frazzled. 😆 www.facebook.com/share/v/167T...
I’m on a normally packed train hoping I’ll be okay for a short ride. I snagged the view out the back of the train. I’m bored and raised here but still gawk at the views like a tourist lol.
Still my absolute favorite view in the entire city. 😍🥰 I’d share bald eagle photos, but my phone was struggling in the evening light and across the distance of the lagoon.
Here’s something you can do RIGHT NOW to help keep migrating birds safe! Please and thank you 💚
Please and thank you. It’s a small, easy thing to do to save bird lives during spring and fall migration. 💚
[dead birds] I checked the nearby hospital tower for the first time since Monday and found four dead migrating birds. 😢 This is the first time I’ve found a common yellowthroat there in nearly a decade. 💔 The others — two kinglets and a thrush — were too decomposed to salvage or share here. 🪶
I snapped a photo with the West Nile Virus crow I helped yesterday. This angle makes him look tiny, but he was a full grown adult. He was stoic, as they so often are. He died before we could even transport him to rehab. The hotline calls for sick crows have been relentless this summer. 😔💔
Okay. I’m 98% sure it’s just a gawky new fledgling. The caller tucked him under some hedges. Adult crows are yelling and swooping. She’s going to check on him in the morning. Everyone keep your fingers crossed 🤞💗🐦⬛
Oh no, it’s another baby crow. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’s just a sleepy kiddo. The latest update is that adult crows are yelling protectively. 🤞❤️🩹
So, this is happening (click through for merch), and 10% of the proceeds go straight back to the PBS Foundation. 🖤 twocrowcollective.com
Here’s a short clip of two of the (at least three) crow adults that are tending the nest. Nobody is staying behind to sit on eggs or hatchlings, so I’m pretty sure they’re feeding nestlings. 🐦⬛
