This is cool. A clipping from 1850 about a new newspaper in PA. Publication was delayed because the editor had "two engagements at the same time, one editorial, the other matrimonial." That matrimonial was my great-great-great grandfather marrying my great-great-great grandmother.

From The Sunbury Gazette and Northumberland County Republican on Saturday, Jan. 5, 1850. "The "Clinton Tribune" is the title of a new paper just started at Lock Haven, Clinton county by Adam J. Greer. In politics it is a whig. It is neatly got up and makes a good appearance. The editor excuses himself for the delay in the issue of his first number in consequence of having on hand two engagements at the same time, one editorial, the other matrimonial. Of course the former had to yield to the pressing demands of the latter."

A 20x40 foot roadrunner made of garbage. It was originally built to live at the town dump, but was later moved to a rest stop.

Sigh. Where do I begin? This is a desert scene on a cloudless day. The sky is a pale blue. To the left is a dormant volcano that is the mountain to a valley below. Middle distance shows simple, single-story homes and outbuildings scattered. In the foreground is sagebrush, rocks and a large rock-shaped perch. Upon the perch is the side view of a standing roadrunner, about 20 feet tall and 40 feet long. The bird is metallic and textured, having been made from a wide variety of spare parts and garbage. It has an odd gaze. Out of view of the image is a rustic rest stop, with stone structures and simple picnic tables, that serves as an overlook to the Mesilla Valley off I-10 in Southern New Mexico. This roadrunner has probably seen some shit.

Back on my bullshit. Coachlite is a scene on Thursdays. That was fun. So glad I get to skate in the Chicagoland area with so many different types of skating to observe. I’ve learned a lot.

Speaking of roller derby, anyone else catch Erin’s sparkly gold skate leash?! Not sure how common these are in ice skating, but this style of leash construction is totally roller. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was a gift from a derby friend. 🏅

Really bad photo of my TV, but it shows Erin Jackson arriving to the rink for the 1,000 meter race. She’s in street clothes, pulling a roller bag. Her white ice skates are hanging around her neck on a sparkly gold skate leash. A skate leash is a long piece of heavy-duty fabric with loops on each end that wraps around part of a skate, allowing for hands-free carrying around the neck or over a shoulder. A pretty common accessory in roller derby, where they’re often made in fun colors or patterns.

My doubleheader today.

My roller skates (Riedell 495s) hung on the outdoor sign for the Tinley Park Roller Rink where I dodged many birthday partying children today.

Sign for the Chicago Salmon Vintage Base Ball Club alongside the run scored bell on some grassy farmland in Orland Park. The arbiter is in a full hoop skirt with a parasol and looks fantastic. The players are in vintage-style jerseys.

Last night of my summer break, so I came to check out Fleetwood. Best floor I’ve ever skated on, and the scene is fantastic.

My roller skated foot blends into carpet with a roller skate pattern in the foreground. In the background is a classic roller rink with lights, skaters and the most beautiful maple wood floor I’ve ever seen in my life at Fleetwood Roller Rink.
