“V, you’re bleeding.”

“Huh—”

V stops short as suddenly as if he’s just been struck, with a dumbfounded expression to match. He pulls his shaking hands away from his face, apparently only just now noticing what Rook has been trying to point out to him this whole time: the dark blood beginning to drip from where the broken glass had cut his hand.

“I— I-I don’t— I can’t be—”

Rook doesn’t fully understand why he seems so shaken by the sight, but that’s something he can figure out later; for now, he’s rising from his seat and reaching for V.

“Here, let me—”

“Don’t fucking touch me!!”

But V smacks his hand away, and though his entire body is shaking by now, he still manages to get up with such suddenness and strength that he sends his chair clattering to the ground.

“Don’t— I don’t fucking need this, I don’t need you, I don’t fucking need any of this—”

“Wait—”

V tries to push past, but Rook is quick to catch him on one broad arm. He let himself be chased away once; he let V push him away once already. He’s not going to let himself make the same mistake now that he did then.

“What the fuck are you— Let me GO—”

“V, just wait—”

V strikes at his arms, at his chest, at whatever parts of him he can reach — once, twice, three times and then over again, each blow utterly futile against Rook’s bulky physique — and when Rook responds by trying to take hold of him by either arm, he drops himself to the ground as a dead weight.

“What the fuck is WRONG with you!?”

“V—”

Rook sinks down to the floor with him, still holding him fast even as V continues to rain down one ineffectual blow after another upon his chest. Somewhere in his peripheral view, somewhere just beyond his direct line of sight, there’s a inexplicably bright, burning red glow, but he’s too determined not to let himself look away, not for anything.

“Why do you even care!? Why do you FUCKING care, huh!? You, of all FUCKING people— Why couldn’t you just fucking leave me be!? You don’t know, you don’t FUCKING know, you wouldn’t be fucking doing this if you fucking KNEW, you’d fucking know exactly why I’m just— Why I need to just— Why— Why won’t you just, fucking— LET ME GO—!!”

Something reverberates in his voice, something that echoes beyond the boundaries of any one of Rook’s senses — but even that isn’t enough to make him let go of V now.

“V...”

His breath becomes ragged and uneven as his words devolve into formless cries, and he keeps pounding at Rook’s chest all the while...until, after what feels like half an age, he finally begins to fall still.

“Why... Why... Why...”

Still, of course, but for the way his voice continues to shake, but for the way his entire body continues to tremble beneath Rook’s hands...until, at last, even that begins to cease, and he slumps into a heap in Rook’s arms.

chronologically speaking this happened a long-ass time ago but that's fine. it's fine. they get to be soft together, for once. just this once.

“Hey... Rook?”

By the time Violet speaks again, enough time has passed for Rook to think he’d fallen back asleep; the cup of tea sits abandoned on the side table, all the better for Violet to twist himself more securely into Rook’s hold, and to thread his own arms around him in turn.

“Yeah?”

Not that he’s especially surprised. Rook expects, after that earlier scene, it will take much longer yet for Violet to slip back into slumber, if he does at all before the night passes into day.

“You...”

Violet’s fingers curl into the fabric of Rook’s shirt, clutching tight.

“You wouldn’t... Y-You’d never...let something like that...ever happen to me... R-Right?”

Rook pauses; he considers. He thinks to answer that such a thing as he had described, the stuff of Violet’s nightmares, couldn’t possibly happen in their waking reality, and for a multitude of reasons, at that... But that isn’t the answer Violet needs to hear right now.

“Never.” He raises a hand to stroke through Violet’s hair, to rub gently at his ears again. “I won’t ever let you come to harm. Never.”

Dimly, a question flickers to life at the back of his mind: is that a promise he can actually keep?

“Good... Good.”

But, regardless of what the answer might be, Violet seems to be reassured; his grip relaxes, and he’s finally able to take a deep, soft breath.

“That’s good.”

It doesn’t matter. There’s no use in questioning whether he can or he can’t; there’s no use in supposing whether Violet’s impossible night terrors might or might not become real. He doesn’t need to wonder, or ponder, or consider anything at all — the only thing that matters is that he keeps Violet from harm, regardless of whatever form that harm might take.

It’s as simple as that.

Somehow, the coldness in Mr. V’s eyes does little to dispel the relief that washes over him in that moment.

“Of course, sir.”

The word slips out automatically — sir — with such familiar ease that he very nearly doesn’t realize he’s said it until Mr. V’s face twists into a grimace.

“Eugh, don’t call me that.” He shakes his head, sending that strange goop rippling from side to side, and his posture becomes even more hunched. “Whatever, let’s just...get this over with.”

The Swatchling bites back the impulse to apologize — somehow, he senses that any apologies here would only make Mr. V’s mood even fouler than it already is — and simply bows his head before he turns to lead the way back into town.

(Dimly, another question rings at the very back of his mind: what was Mr. V doing all the way out here, in a place like this, to begin with? But perhaps he’d do better to think on that some other time.)

He expects a stern look, but instead, Swatch’s expression seems to soften.

“To be perfectly clear: however you choose to spend your time off the clock, and whomever you choose to spend that time with, is in no way my business to manage. If ever I have given you the impression that I believe otherwise, then, again, I apologize. However, that being said...”

Of course; of course this would be about the Addisons. How could he be so stupid, to think that Swatch would let the issue drop without another word? How could he have been so stupid, to have let any of those Addisons, let alone that Addison, wrap him around their finger so easily? How could he ever, ever, ever...

hey wow i answered basically this exact prompt in the fc server last week and i actually did it for more characters than just the awful rabbit 🤯 wow!!!!!!!!!!

Robyn *thinks* he has normal person pain tolerance but, in a high-stress/high-adrenaline situation like, say, the heat of battle, he's more likely not to notice anything's wrong until he's nearly lost a limb about it. something something clone hardiness

Kaizou does have normal person pain tolerance, but he's the type to play it off if it makes him look cool; unfortunately, he is also more than willing to play up his hurts and booboos if it means he'll receive any amount of positive attention for it. something something middle child syndrome

Noah is an avowed stoic. you will not know he is experiencing any kind of pain (which he does, on the regular, thanks to a number of old, formerly-life-threatening injuries) unless he literally cannot move because of it. even if he stubs his toe or gets a papercut or something, he will Keep It Inside until he can be reasonably certain that nobody is going to see him holler about it.

Vespertine .....is variable, lol. when it comes to minor and unexpected everyday hurts, he will complain about VERY loudly to anybody around who has the misfortune of listening to him hiss and spit and swear about it. that being said, he does also experience some amount of chronic pain from the burn scars that cover nearly half his body -- healed, but not without contracture, and prone to painful dryness if he's careless about applying his lotions or protecting against sun exposure -- and he's much less likely to complain about this, ever, because that would just be a sign of weakness, wouldn't it?
