Pros and cons with this one. The prose is easy to read, but there are pretty major plot issues. Too many scenes there don't move anything forward. Then, most plot scenes get resolved quickly too w/o tying into the next plot action. I think this novel could've been stronger as a short story #booksky
This is my favorite historical fantasy book ever, the audio book is well done too #booksky
"Operator connect me to the moon" and all kinds of interesting anachronisms in this one #booksky
This book was astonishingly good. Best horror book I've read all year for sure. Really simple concept, simple writing, brilliant storytelling #booksky
Unfortunately just a remarkably disappointing book for me, really felt like it was close to but not quite able to succeed anywhere: characters, setting, plot, themes, all just a little lackluster. Also very clearly grimdark fantasy, not horror at all. Why was this in the horror section? #booksky
Excellent read, never experienced a fantasy book so strongly influenced by Egyptian mythology. Fair warning, this book really throws you into the deep end with all the cultural jargon and social structures #booksky
An interesting novel, unique take on a lot of the major historical events across the Roman Republic. I'll definitely read the sequel. Following one object passed from parent to child across the centuries worked rather well #booksky
Viscerally disturbing horror book. Really well written and deeply unsettling. I don't think I've read anything that did a good job of making everyone seem like they have no agency, they all seem to be driven solely by their impulses #booksky
I don't usually go in for romance, but this was excellent. I'm guessing this was heavily inspired by Sally Ride who is mentioned once in the text. Just a very compelling, tragic, and distinctly human love story #booksky
Excellent finale to Roma Sub Rosa. I'd say this is the strongest installment of the entire series. Delivers on all promises, makes Ancient Rome feel lived in, just Roma Sub Rosa at its finest all the way through #booksky
Crazy that no one came to Trump's 250th birthday party, pretty rude of us
One anachronism in this one is the repeated use of the word "teenager" in a novel set in Ancient Rome. "Teenager" is a very modern term, the concept of a distinct category between childhood and adulthood was invented by marketers to sell things to them so it feels really out of place here #booksky
I really liked this one. The plot and characters weren't earth shattering but something about the writing style is really appealing and engaging to read #booksky
This one was fine, the mystery was rather contrived and the family drama was pretty dull, but definitely the most interesting period historically of any of the series so far and represented very well #booksky
The plot in this one was really interesting, doing some really unique things with modern dystopia. Only issue was it felt a bit rushed, could've given each of these characters and novella at least instead of running through all 8 or so in 300 pages, might be too efficient/clinical #booksky
This has been on my reading list forever... unfortunately it should have stayed there. This is probably the most boring fantasy book I've ever read. No depth at all, just a long chain of completely flat characters and non self aware tropes leading to the most predicable outcomes imaginable #booksky
Great book, crazy how they still manage to raise the stakes to this extent book after book, but it feels like we're definitely getting into the endgame now #booksky
Pretty great book, practically read the whole thing in one sitting. Really unique approach to existential horror. The narrative is a blend of Chinese folklore with the modern discrimination Chinese Americans face #booksky
Sometimes you start reading a book and it's just so dull it takes a month to finish, that's what happened with this one. There are points that are interesting, but overall it could've been half along with fewer than half as many characters. I just didn't care about any of them #booksky
Meh. Not as nearly good as Martian or Hail Mary. Can't all be winners I guess. #booksky
This might just be me, but I hate this style of book. It has no margin space at all so the middle of the book covers half a word on either side and my thumbs cover a few words on each edge. I guess it's cheap to manufacture which is why it is so common but honestly a little annoying to read #booksky
Pretty good one overall, felt a bit longer than it needed to be true to the name. I don't recommend getting this book on Kindle like i did. Seems like they used some sort of scanning software that caused a typo every 20 words or so. Most are innocuous, some are really illegible #booksky
Really great book, love his attention to detail and logical world/plot. Very aspirational #booksky
