Hi there, and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a weekly game with simple rules: guns fuck, or they suck. This week: the Harrington & Richardson XM144 SPIW rifle. Developed as a prototype weapon for the Army, it shot three 5.6x51mm steel darts contained in plastic shelled "trounds." Few were made.

The gun, mounted on a tripod. Note that there a mix of steel (including in the 20 round magazine) and clear plastics made to show off H&R's newly developed polymers, particularly visible in the stock and in the three round rotating grenade launcher present at the front of the weapon.

Despite an immense weight there was a belief that this would lead to a future weapon development platform. The plastics were an attempt to reduce that weight to make it more manageable but still as outfitted it was a 23 lb weapon system and as such the military decided it was too heavy to reasonably outfit soldiers in the field with.

The patent, filed by David Dardick. If that name rings a bell, the Dardick Tround also popped up in a handgun from around this time, as a revolver/semiautomatic middle child, which we have covered here before. He worked directly with Harrington and Richardson for their prototype, specifically on the bolt, the feeding mechanism, and the ammunition itself which followed his ideologies and methods.

The ammunition, sat next to another famous Dardick Tround, the .38 caliber handgun. Note that the handgun is MUCH shorter, the rifle cartridge goes on beyond the image as well, and also note that the handgun has the ammunition buried in the center while the rifle has three darts, none of which are technically truly centered.

Hi there, and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a weekly game with simple rules. This week, the Gepard 9mm SMG. Developed by a Russian military unit, it can be chambered in .380, 9x18 Makarov, 9x19 Parabellum, and more. It is either direct blowback or gas operated depending on setup. Few were made.

The original guns were built out of modified AK-74u parts, which is evident when you see the gun lying on it's side as you do here. Unlike most AK's the magazine is in the polymer pistol grip.

You can see the various bolts, barrels, and springs that came with the system so you could change out calibers and even recoil systems based on the current situational need.

The guns were designed to be super compact with the stock folded and were geared towards police sales, although the guns never took off as their feature set produced unique but minimally consequential advantages for the cost.

Stuff and Things make a version of it that you can buy nowadays. It does not come with the stock as a way of keeping the guns "pistol legal" instead it's based on the Nak-9 and uses Glock magazines.

Hi there, and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a weekly game with simple rules: guns fuck, or they suck. This week, the Crossfire Mk 1. Chambered in both 12 gauge and 5.56, fed from both STANAG and removable four round tube tube magazines, this pump action combo gun was sold between 1999 and 2001.

The gun from the side, which looks like an AI was fed a shotgun and an AR and it tried to meld them together without really understanding what did what. There are two barrels. Note that to make the 5.56 barrel sixteen inches and the shotgun barrel eighteen inches the AR action has to move forward a bit.

The controls are relatively simple. There's a toggle system on the left side of the rifle that lets you pick if you're in shotgun or rifle mode, as well as a bolt release that lets you cycle the gun without shooting it.

The gun was originally sold with a vertical grip designed to be attached to the pump mechanism, which helped with recoil control don't get me wrong but it's main point was to aid in pumping the gun as the length of pull made cycling the weapon difficult and like many pump action platforms it needs a hard pump action to cycle the thing properly.

The military's already abandoning the M7/6.8 Sig (except the Army.) US SOCOM is currently requesting a new rifle, that will shoot normal ammo as well as some new super high velocity ammunition that should double the range while maintaining accuracy. They specifically don't want anything but 5.56.

The description of the request, which is a replacement for the current generation of M4 (called the URG-I, or Upper Receiver Group - Improved.) They are essentially saying "we need a new rifle to replace our main fighting rifle. Yes, we know there is a 6.8 Army rifle. Anyway we want a 5.56 fighting carbine."

The request SPECIFICES 5.56 in multiple places, they want to be able to develop new ammunition that will increase effective range.

The HICAR requirements start with 5.56 NATO as the only option. It goes on to say that it should fit with the M4 lower receiver group without permanent modifications, ideally it'll do it with none. It needs to shoot M855A1 and Mk262, essentially "the stuff we have in inventory let us keep using it." They want an 11 inch barrel, a specific suppressor, and no more than 1 MOA with a preference for a half MOA.

Hi there, and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a weekly game with simple rules: guns fuck, or they suck. This week, it's the Modele 1915 Chauchat light machine gun. Chambered in 8mm Lebel and used by both American and French forces in WW1, it shot 240 rounds a minute out of 20 round open magazines.

While they were designed to be able to be used during marching fire, French forces used them most as positional control weapons, and in that role, with French forces, the data and the stories both show that the gun ran well and was a preferred weapon of choice for positional control.

Due to the way the action and ejection port were manufactured the sights on the Chauchot are offset. This combined with the open bolt operation meant that while the gun itself could be accurate it required specialized training to get soldiers capable with it at long distances, most of whom did not receive it.

The Blyskawica was made by teams that normally made electronics, most of whom had never made a fun and they included a lot of details from other machines to hide intentions and because they easily could. The stocks all had lighting patterns etched into them since they had the tooling ready to go.

Hi there, and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a game with simple rules: guns fuck, or they suck. This week, the Tula Arms APS Underwater Rifle. Chambered in a 5.45 case with a 120mm long bullet, the gun is specifically designed to be accurate and reliable below water while barely functioning above.

The gun being fired underwater by Russian Spetznaz Frogmen. The gun exists entirely to be used by forces protecting naval shipyards.

A diver with the gun just above the water. The gun will in fact function above the water but the barrel has no rifling as the gun is expecting to stabilize the darts with hydrodynamic effects and as such the gun has a limited effective range out of water.

The gun with the stock collapses next two a sampling of the rounds. The magazine can hold 26 rounds of ammunition, which considering the gun replaces a five shot pistol that has to be mailed to another country to be reloaded this is a significant capability.

You might be tactical but are you "mount a full sized shotgun underneath your full length suppressed rifle" tactical? Are you a bad enough dude to mount a bayonet to your shotgun mounted to your rifle? Or to use a 20 round magazine because you don't want the front of that gun getting TOO Heavy huh?

An AR with an A2 stock, a taped pistol grip, an ACOG, a full sized shotgun mounted underneath the rifle, a bayonet mounted to the shotgun, and a twenty round magazine because you don't want to use a 30 round magazine that might be HEAVY and you definitely need to save weight with the SECOND FUCKING GUN attacked ...

Hi there and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a weekly game with simple rules - guns fuck or they suck. This week, the Sadu ASALT 96. A 9mm Romanian SMG with an Uzi action and bolt fitted with MP5-like furniture and moved forward of the trigger, it is somewhat common as a stand in for TV and movies.

The guns also came in a 16" variant, and were attempted for US import but came out right at the beginning of the assault weapon ban and never got sold stateside.

A total of 500 were produced for the Romanian military for a series of military trials, and while the gun seemed to perform reliably the contract did not move forward. The action was reliable (it is literally an Uzi) but like all open bolt designs it has difficulty being controllable at longer distances as the bolt pushes the gun down before the bullet goes off, while the additional length meant it wasn't a good replacement for the Uzi in specific roles.

Most of the surviving examples have found some significant adoption by Hollywood, where they make great stand ins for universes that need an unrecognizable SMG as they had a relatively small production run and suffered from timing with US laws.

Hi there, and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a weekly game with simple rules: guns fuck, or they suck. This week; the StG-44 "Krummlauf," a modification to a German assault rifle which bent the barrel to allow for shooting around barriers. Used in trenches and bunkers; barrels lasted ~200 rounds.

The gun, right up to the periscope optical attachment, looked like an exceedingly normal weapon. The gun, chambered in 7mm Kurz, used normal StG-44 magazines, stocks, and parts outside of the optic and barrel.

A marine showing how a Krummlauf with a 30 degree bend would be used in trench warfare. The guns with the lesser bend did have a significantly longer barrel life but also significantly less tactical impact.

The more extreme, 90 degree barrel bends, as shown above, were in several cases installed permanently into defensive structures and acted as "automated turrets" with humans doing the automation, making them the mechanical turk of turrets.

It's hard to SHOW the weirdness here so it's likely never going to be a Friday Fucks candidate, but fun fact: Fusion Firearms made a version of the M1911 in 9x18 Makarov. I have no clue why. I don't think THEY had a real reason why and stopped after only a few were bought. But still. Fun weirdness.

The Fusion M1911 "Riptide" model, with a 3" barrel, which they made a handful of examples of in 9x18 Makarov. 9x18 size wise is physically halfway between 9x17 Browning (aka .380 ACP) and 9x19 Parabellum, but it has ballistics closer to .380 than 9x19.

A size comparison of 9 Makarov for comparison. 9x17 and 9x18 are about the same length of cartridge, with 9x18 having a slightly longer case but a much shorter bullet sticking out, while 9x19 is both a longer case and a MUCH longer bullet, even longer than the .380 example.
