Angelou distinguishes change from diminishment. Life events can alter you, sometimes deeply, without stripping your essential dignity or strength. This is a resilient posture. You adapt, learn, and sometimes hurt, but you refuse collapse of self-worth. Refusing reduction is not denial of pain. It is choosing interpretation that preserves agency inside adversity. Ask not whether hardship changed you, it will, but whether it narrowed you or deepened you. The refusal to be reduced keeps growth available in circumstances that might otherwise break you.

Housing is a right
Bigotry of any kind is a sign of ignorance
Affordable quality healthcare should be a right
Common sense gun reform is achievable
Community policing works
There is no shame in being on SNAP, Medicare/ medicaid

Speed is overvalued in cultures that confuse urgency with progress.
Slow movement can still be strong movement when direction is clear and continuity is intact. Stopping is what breaks trajectory, not modest pace. This is encouraging for long projects, healing, skill building, and personal change, all of which often unfold unevenly. Instead of judging yourself by comparison speed, judge by consistency and honesty of effort. Keep the line moving, even in small increments. Persistence over time usually outperforms bursts of intensity followed by collapse.
