i mean look at this thing, it's just wild. pure fantasy.

map of frisland the phantom island, from 1562. it is roughly rectangular in shape, with a jagged coastline and smaller islands off the coast. there are named cities and mountains and forests and cultivated fields. there are ships drawn in the bays and inlets, and of course various weird sea monsters dotted around in the sea. one of them might be a narwhal or swordfish, another one looks like no sea creature i've ever seen, it has a snout like a pig, big teeth, scales, and what might be dual waterspouts or gigantic pigtails protruding from the top of its head. the cities all seem to have walls and rounded gates and lots of buildings with tall spires. they look very unlike anything that would have existed anywhere around that region in the 16th century. it's like a map in a fantasy book, but this was supposed to represent reality. unfortunately 16th century cartographers relied on some highly unreliable narrators.

ongoing earthquake swarm by barðarbunga volcano in iceland. 2 quakes at 4.8 and 4.1, 10-ish quakes between 3 and 4, 240-ish smaller quakes in the last few hours. idk what to feel, this volcano once produced the largest known lava flow on earth in the last 10,000 years, it's a monster.

french, 1969 not very noveau anymore. i still use this, it's my only french dictionary. this is illustrated and has maps and flags and grammar, the morse alphabet, latin expressions, diagrams of telescopes and telegraphs, traffic signs, and on top of that a 700-page encyclopedia section.

we have a horror cheese too made with sour skimmed cow's milk. the name translates as "old cheese" and i've never tasted it because i don't do moldy cheese even when it's supposed to be moldy. i guess it's still not as bad as that italian cheese with the jumping larvae.

ipod nano 6th generation, 2010. this thing was the size of a postage stamp! which unfortunately made it very easy to lose, i had to replace my original 16GB gunmetal grey with an 8GB silver from ebay because by the time i lost the 1st one, apple wasn't selling these anymore. 24 hours of battery!

ipod nano 6th gen, a tiny square metal music player almost entirely covered by a colour screen with rounded corners and a black frame around the screen image. next to it is a white wireless airbud (airpod maybe?) for scale, showing just how tiny this was.

nokia 6300, 2007. one of the best phones ever made. it was affordable and robust, and the battery lasted 3 weeks! the brushed steel, big colour screen, clean lines, this felt so sophisticated. when i broke it, i got another one in black. i would have kept using these if nokia had kept making them.

nokia 6300, a candybar-format phone with a numerical keypad. the phone itself is matte steel, with the screen framed in black. there are 2 small rectangular buttons below the screen that'd light up in blue when active, below these are 2 similar buttons below, one red and one green, for answering calls and hanging up. in the middle there's a square home/navigation button.

canon digital ixus 50 compact camera, 2005. i hadn't owned a camera since i was a child, this was my first adult camera. so glamorous. 5 megapixels! 3x zoom! 2-inch screen! this came on my big australia trip in 2008, i broke it in boston in 2011. small and cute and very reliable until it broke.

canon digital ixus 50 compact camera. this is also champagne-coloured metal with a textured circle design around the lens on the front. the top picture shows the front of the camera, the bottom shows the back with the controls and tiny little screen. i replaced this after it broke with a touchscreen camera, an updated model in the same range, that was just super annoying to use with screen lag and finger marks and ugh.

sharp md-mt 821 minidisc player/recorder, late 90s. minidisc was so cool. the little discs were adorable and came in all the pretty colours, you could make mixtapes with near-cd sound quality, skip, shuffle, edit, and with the optical cable auto-record from your cd player. 11.5 hours of battery!

a few of my favourite things, in chronological order: technics sl-xp700 portable cd player, early 1990s. my best friend in high school, this went everywhere i went, including interrail in 1993. after i broke the anti-skip, it had to be held perfectly flat. it weighed 348 grams (0.77lb).

technics sl-xp700, a dark grey portable cd player. it came with rechargeable batteries and had an additional compartment for regular AA batteries.

for you may the 4th may be star wars day. for me may the 4th will always be shark bay day.

two land cruisers at a rest stop in western australia. one of them is terribly, terribly bogged in mud front of a large sign that says welcome to shark bay world heritage area. there's a young woman standing in front of the not-bogged land cruiser. behind the bogged cruiser a man is handling a large red bag. this is an exhaust jack, an inflatable bag that connects to a car's exhaust pipe and is placed underneath a car to lift it as the bag is inflated. this turned out to be completely useless in our case. on the ground in front of the car is part of a neon yellow recovery strap. this snapped and went frighteningly airborne when a truck tried to pull us out.

the passenger side of the bogged car, buried in mud to the top of the wheel wells. on the ground is another part of the broken neon yellow recovery strap.

maybe not the most conventional beauty, and it prefers ditches over flowerbeds, but it's the best little wildflower because it's the first one to turn up every spring, in the most unlikely places.

coltsfoot, a small yellow wildflower peeking up between rocks and last year's dead leaves. it looks a bit like dandelion, and there are dandelion leaves growing around it, but this is not dandelion.
