3. Sentimental Value Genre: Drama Director: Joachim Trier Rotten Tomatoes: 97% Letterboxd: 4.2/5 Right from the start this movie hooked me. I love movies about family relationships and mental health and that’s what this is all about. Great acting performances in this one ❤️

4. She Rides Shotgun Genre: Action/Crime/Thriller Director: Nick Rowland Rotten Tomatoes: 88% Letterboxd: 3.4/5 A hidden gem imo… interesting plot but also a crazy good child performance that really blew me away. For a while this was almost my 2nd fav of the year

5. Hamnet Genre: Drama/Romance Director: Chloe Zhao Rotten Tomatoes: 87% Letterboxd: 4.2/5 An emotional gut punch. Truly cried throughout so much of this and an amazing child performance plus Jessie Buckley is a bleeding heart plz give her an Oscar

6. Companion Genre: Horror/Thriller/SciFi Director: Drew Hancock Rotten Tomatoes: 93% Letterboxd: 3.4/5 When I saw this I went into it blind which made the perfect experience. Even if I was anticipating what was to come, I would have loved this. Sophie Thatcher supremacy!

7. Thunderbolts* Genre: SciFi/Action/Adventure Director: Jake Shreier Rotten Tomatoes: 88% Letterboxd: 3.6/5 As I mentioned above, im not a big superhero movie fan… but this one hit me hard, I low-key cried. Making depression the villain was so smart and hooked me

9. The Ugly Stepsister Genre: Horror/Fantasy/Drama/Comedy Director: Emilie Blichfeldt Rotten Tomatoes: 96% Letterboxd: 3.7/5 Ive discovered over the last two years I’m obsessed with female directed body horror films… this is easily the most underrated horror movie this year

10. Fairyland Genre: Drama Director: Andrew Durham Rotten Tomatoes: 98% Letterboxd: 3.5/5 Technically a Sundance release from 2023 but didn’t come into theaters until this year and severely overlooked. Touching father/daughter movie, I love movies focused on relationships

11. Eternity Genre: Fantasy/Romance/Drama/Comedy Director: David Freyne Rotten Tomatoes: 77% Letterboxd: 3.8/5 Truly one of the best rom com type movies of the 2020s. It’s funny, thoughtful, and profound in a way I didn’t expect it to be. Love is the little things ❤️

12. KPop Demon Hunters Genre: Fantasy/Comedy/Musical Director: Chris Appelhans & Maggie Kang Rotten Tomatoes: 94% Letterboxd: 3.6/5 Not only does the music slap but the story itself is like actually really good and meaningful. Definitely was surprised at how good this is

13. The Long Walk Genre: Horror/SciFi/Thriller Director: Francis Lawrence Rotten Tomatoes: 88% Letterboxd: 3.5/5 What can I say, im a sucker for a good dystopian story. I haven’t read the book or anything but I really enjoyed this anyway and loved the lead performances

14. Dust Bunny Genre: Thriller/Fantasy/Action Director: Bryan Fuller Rotten Tomatoes: 84% Letterboxd: 3.3/5 I can see why it’s criticized but the story just really worked so well for me. It’s sweet and fun and there’s a great found family vibe to this. Visually stunning too

15. Twinless Genre: Comedy/Drama Director: James Sweeney Rotten Tomatoes: 97% Letterboxd: 3.8/5 Dylan’s performance in this movie is so overlooked, and I’d say it’s one of the best of the year. Touching movie with some turns you don’t expect

16. The Perfect Neighbor Genre: Documentary Director: Geeta Gandbhir Rotten Tomatoes: 99% Letterboxd: 3.7/5 I’m not really a big doc person but this one is extremely moving — very disturbing and tragically sad. Maybe crosses a line into intrusive but also an important watch

17. Bugonia Genre: SciFi/Crime Director: Yorgos Lanthimos Rotten Tomatoes: 87% Letterboxd: 3.9/5 Mysterious and fun but there’s also something extremely sad and tragic about the characters in this movie and it just really connected with me. Emma Stone ate of course

18. Sinners Genre: Thriller/Action/Horror Director: Ryan Coogler Rotten Tomatoes: 97% Letterboxd: 4.1/5 This movie was a sensation for a reason - it’s something new and different and the music is awesome. A lot to read into with this one too. Instantly iconic

19. The Phoenician Scheme Genre: Adventure/Comedy/Crime Director: Wes Anderson Rotten Tomatoes: 77% Letterboxd: 3.5/5 I low-key love pretty much everything Wes Anderson makes but this was great and severely underrated. Very funny and had a cute/sweet touch to it

20. 28 Years Later Genre: SciFi/Thriller/Horror Director: Danny Boyle Rotten Tomatoes: 89% Letterboxd: 3.4/5 This was surprisingly emotional - such good acting performances and the score really elevates it too. Looking forward to the next two installments

21. Wake Up Dead Man Genre: Comedy/Thriller/Mystery Director: Rian Johnson Rotten Tomatoes: 92% Letterboxd: 3.8 Not as good as the other knives out mysteries to me, but i love mysteries and Josh O’Conner so this is still one of the best of the year

22. Omaha Genre: Drama Director: Cole Webley Rotten Tomatoes: 89% Letterboxd: 3.6/5 Saw this at Sundance and don’t think it’s been theatrically released yet but it’s a devastatingly sad little indie movie and I didn’t see it ending how it did

23. Oh, Hi! Genre: Comedy/Romance/Thriller Director: Sophie Brooks Rotten Tomatoes: 64% Letterboxd: 3.2/5 Maybe the plots a little fucked up and far fetched but I loved this and believe in Molly Gordon supremacy

24. The Housemaid Genre: Thriller/Mystery Director: Paul Feig Rotten Tomatoes: 75% Letterboxd: 3.1/5 This is so fun like ik on letterboxd ppl are hating because of a certain person but Amanda makes up for it plus the story is iconic and campy

25. Superman Genre: SciFi/Adventure/Action Director: James Gunn Rotten Tomatoes: 83% Letterboxd: 3.9/5 I’m not much of a superhero movie fan, but this one hit all the right notes. Amazing casting for all the major parts and truly captures the spirit of Superman lol

27. Caught Stealing Genre: Thriller/Crime/Comedy Director: Darren Aronofsky Rotten Tomatoes: 84% Letterboxd: 3.4/5 Reminded me a lot of After Hours and somehow a little of True Romance too. Underrated thriller from this summer imo, plus a perfect kitty performance

28. Mickey 17 Genre: Comedy/Adventure/SciFi Director: Bong Joon Ho Rotten Tomatoes: 78% Letterboxd: 3.6/5 This movie made me finally fall in love with Robert Pattinson, who I hadn’t liked for a long time cuz of Twilight. Fun and funny, and mostly overlooked imo

29. Warfare Genre: Action/War Director: Ray Mendoza & Alex Garland Rotten Tomatoes: 92% Letterboxd: 3.5/5 This movie is a hard sit and I cried throughout half of it simply for how dire and tragic it is. Fuck war and what people have to go through in it… good cast in this movie
