Clark still felt the echoes of loss as he landed in the dappled light of the clearing. His chest ached with it, but it began to fade the longer he stood there. That place, that world—it hadn't been real. None of it was.

This wasn't real, either.

The golden-green light of sun streaming through the leaves, the scent of flowers and dirt and nature, the rustling of the breeze in the trees and the chittering of birds—it was all fake, all constructed by whoever had cast this spell on them.

Clark heard Bruce before he saw him, the metallic clinking of armor hitting his ears a moment before Bruce broke into the clearing. He looked dashing, perfectly at ease in the heavy plate and mail armor.

And that moment of hope was enough to render Bruce incapable of pushing it all back down again. He couldn't look at Clark, couldn't be near him. Bruce faced the wall—the familiar portrait of his parents looming down on him. He dropped his gaze to the fireplace below and stumbled back in shock. That was—the photo on the mantel, alongside ones he recognized of the children, was a wedding photograph. Undeniably a wedding photograph.$

Clark heard Bruce choking from across the room as the world re-materialized around them. He was by his side in seconds, barely sparing a moment to be relieved for his powers' return.

Bruce coughed until his face was red, bent almost double with the force of it, and then…he was fine.

He stood up, breathing heavy, and shrugged Clark away from him. "Sorry—I don't know what that was. The smoke, maybe?"

"Maybe…" Clark repeated, less than reassured. "You're okay, though?" he asked.

"Yeah, it's—" Bruce looked up at him and smiled. "Seems you're able to express yourself again—you look worried. That's good. Better."

"It's a relief," Clark admitted. These places were getting stranger, more and more uncomfortable. It didn't give him much hope for what they'd find here.

The sun was bright, glaring above him. It was as though whoever was doing this wanted them as disoriented as possible. He ground his teeth, looking around, gauging his position. He was in civilian clothes—well fitted, dark fabrics, typical to what he usually wore in casual public settings, on the rare occasion he indulged in such situations.

The quality of the sunlight and the sun's position in the sky put him in North America, somewhere rural, based on the street he was on. It was a typical small town, but familiar to Bruce on a deeper level to that. Clark was nowhere to be seen, but Bruce had a feeling he knew where he could be found.

He wandered down the main street, trying to remember the last time he had been here. He saw the sign he was looking for, hand-painted, pointing towards the center of town. Smallville Farmer's Market.

The smoke didn't clear from Clark's eyes as the world solidified around him. He felt heavy, weighed down. There was something covering his face, and he was warm, too warm. He looked around, trying to see through the smoke, and he felt his heart drop.

This wasn't mystical, world-erasing smoke—it was just smoke. Thick and heavy and hot, filling the room, emanating from the doorway into the next room. Through it, he could just about make out the red-orange flames licking their way across the floor, engulfing the carpet as it went.

Clark ripped the mask off his face and tried to blow the flames out, but when he inhaled, the smoke entered his lungs, choking him. He fell to his knees, spluttering for breath, fumbling to get the mask back on his face.

The weight of the protective gear on his shoulders, the mask, the burning in his lungs, the sweat on his back—it all added up to one thing: his powers were gone. Again.

Bruce didn't like this.

He didn't like this at all.

This made for three times he'd been dragged without warning into a new and strange world. He wanted to believe this was it—that this version of the Manor's living room was the version he had sat in the previous night, that he was home.

He wasn't sure he could believe it. Something felt off, and it wasn't just the fact that Clark was sitting next to him, a tray of Alfred's cookies and a pot of tea on a table between them.

"Is this—?" Clark didn't finish the question, and Bruce knew he felt it too. The thing that sat on his shoulders, the sense that everything had been moved just a little to the left.

When they started dating, it felt only natural to keep it quiet. To keep the circle small—after all, as close as Batman and Superman were, Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne were strangers. For them to suddenly start dating, out of nowhere, it would raise questions neither were prepared to answer. But unlike the rest of their secrets...this was one they might want to share with the world.
