they/them - bi - 29 - multi-stan 🏳️🌈 please read before you follow:
60. Tusk Love - 2.75 ⭐️ fiction, fantasy, romance This was recommended to me as a monster romance and the MMC is not a monster btw. I did like it slightly more bc of that lmao, but it just felt very trope heavy and repetitive. It’s missing something. I did enjoy the combat/fighting scenes though.
59. Wonder Woman: Blood and Guts: DC Compact Comics Edition - 4.0 ⭐️ fiction, comics I know this run was retconned but idc. Give me more Wonder Woman and Greek mythology with cool character designs. I want this shit as an animated series. I need to see it with my eyeballs immediately.
58. The Unworthy - 4.75 ⭐️ fiction, dystopian, horror, literary I spent my morning DEVOURING this story. I read tender is the flesh by Bazterrica earlier this year, and it wasn’t my favorite but this I loved. It’s apocalypse brought on by climate disaster meets cult told through diary. Also, GAY.
57. Birds of Prey: Huntress - 4.5 ⭐️ fiction, comics I’ve been reading through some intro stuff on huntress and this was really solid. It gave an excellent background on her and it was good prep for when I start reading birds of prey stuff. My ONLY complaint is that this run is only 6 issues
here are the digipacks (the matz unit signed one might be my most prized possession)
56. The Chromatic Fantasy - 5 🌟 fiction, fantasy, graphic novel, lgbtqia+ god this is STUNNING. If you like art reminiscent of stained glass and medieval(ish) trans men falling in love, this is for you. I need a physical copy, and for this to be turned into an animated series/film immediately.
55. When Brooklyn Was Queer: A History - 4.5 ⭐️ nonfiction, history, lgbtqia+ I love reading about queer history and I’m glad I picked this up for pride month. We have been and will always be able to find community through adversity. We are resilient in spite of it all. 🥹
54. Trifles - 4.5 ⭐️ fiction, classics, play My sibling is doing a rendition of this one-act play for university, and recommended I listen to/read it :) Thematically it reminds me of A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen. It is super short, so my only complaint is that I wanted more.
53. Soul Eater - 2.75 ⭐️ fiction, dystopian, fantasy, lgbtqia+, romance I think I have cracked the code for me to be able to enjoy a monster romance. 1. It has to be queer and 2. I have to stop trying to take it seriously. btw check tw bc I went in blind and was bombarded by homophobic torture ???
52. Huntress: Year One - 4.5 ⭐️ fiction, comics I had never read anything focused on Huntress as a character before, and I was pleasantly surprised by this. Her backstory is interesting, and it was cool to see how her Catholicism is intertwined with her behavior as a vigilante.
51. Time Is a Mother - 4.75 ⭐️ nonfiction, lgbtqia+, poetry This was my first time reading anything by Ocean Vuong, and I definitely will be checking out his other work. My favorites were “Not Even,” “Amazon History of a Former Nail Salon Worker,” and “Dear Rose.”
49. Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 12 - 5 🌟 fiction, fantasy, horror, manga nanami grabbed a mf by his hair and that alone made me give this 5 stars…. nanami pls come home the kids miss you
48. Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 11 - 4.0 ⭐️ fiction, fantasy, horror, manga that nanami cover…. 🤤
47. Model Home - 4.75 ⭐️ fiction, horror, lgbtqia+, thriller goddamn… this book was WILD. It’s a haunted house story turned on its head. Would I recommend this for everyone? No, but I do think it’s worth checking out. Check tw bc I didn’t, and I was kind of fucked up after certain chapters.
46. Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 10 - 4.0 ⭐️ fiction, fantasy, horror, manga starting the shibuya incident story arc after enduring hidden inventory/premature death WILL destroy me
45. The Girl from the Sea - 4.5 ⭐️ fiction, fantasy, graphic novel, lgbtqia+, young adult this was adorable, but too short and fast-paced. I wanted to sit with the characters for a little longer, but it didn’t really let me do that. overall though, soooooooo cute!
44. When Trees Testify: Science, Wisdom, History, and America's Black Botanical Legacy - 5.0 🌟 nonfiction, history, memoir, nature, race this was perfectly executed. It took me longer than I expected to read because I really had to sit with it at times, and it was worth it. (pls go read this)
43. A Soul to Keep - 0.25 ⭐️ fiction, fantasy, romance I had to read this for book club and it was so fucking bad. If it wasn’t for book club, it would have been a dnf 😭
42. Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 9 - 4.0 ⭐️ fiction, fantasy, horror, manga satosugu will kill me one day I think
41. Married to the Alien Cowboy - 2.75 ⭐️ fiction, romance, science fiction I really appreciated the silliness of this alien romance. I need more funny moments in a romance for me to have a good time. However, there was a major tone shift about 75% of the way through that I didn’t care for tbh :/
40. The Spear Cuts Through Water - 5.0 🌟 fiction, fantasy, lgbtqia+ I fear if I explain anything about this book, I will spoil it, so all I will say is everyone has to read this book right now. This is among my top 5 favorite books of all time. I need more people to talk about this with holy shit
39. At 30, I Realized I Had No Gender - 3.0 ⭐️ nonfiction, gender, lgbtqia+, manga, memoir pros: very cool info about the experience of queer people in Japan and intersex identities!! cons: the slice of life formatting wasn’t my fave and I wish it didn’t feel so disjointed at times :/
38. Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 8 - 4.0 ⭐️ fiction, fantasy, horror, manga oh hidden inventory my beloved
37. Wonder Woman: Earth One - 4.0 ⭐️ fiction, comics I read the first volume back in january, so I found the compact edition that included all three volumes and read that :)
36. The Scapegoat - 2.75 ⭐️ fiction, literary, mystery, thriller this was incredibly strange and not necessarily in a good way. I considered adding it to my dnf list, but I kept going bc there was something about it that kept pulling me back. Very dreamlike and confusing at times
35. Whispers of the Deep - 2.75 ⭐️ fiction, fantasy, romance this is like part 3 in my attempt at trying to like monster romance, and we have learned that I can’t do minotaur romance, but I may be ok with mermaid/creatures of the deep. I liked this one enough to check out the sequel at least lmfao
34. Bitter - 3.75 ⭐️ fiction, fantasy, lgbtqia+, young adult I liked this more than the first book, but I think I have similar feelings about this book as the first one in the sense that the story felt rushed. However, I do recognize the importance of stories like this one and did enjoy it overall.
