I am excited to discover (w/help of PictureThis) that I have 2 kinds of goldenrod in this spot, neither of which I planted. Solidago canadensis vs altissima. Slightly different bloom times. Internet says sparrows, juncos and goldfinch all eat goldenrod seed, so I think that’s how they got here

I mostly subscribe to a chaos/let the plants decide theory of gardening, but sometimes I see someone who has really intentionally landscaped and I’m jealous! This yard! The artful drifts! The vertical structure with mid tier shrubs/small trees! The prickly pear! The hang out spot
i kind of want this to happen b/c i think it has the potential to be a little hilarious
After further internet consultation, I pruned the damaged stems just below where they were split. I also have to worry about oak wilt b/c the cuts were during the growing season, so I found some old latex paint in the basement & painted the cut stems. I am leaving the shredded leaves.
Oak Baby took quite a bit of damage. At least 2 of the 6 stems completely lost their tops, many leaves shredded. By a miracle, the top of the biggest/strongest stem was left intact.
My plan after consulting the internet has been to let these stems go for it all summer, and then slowly over the next couple of winters, prune them down to one main stem. Alas, the next chapter of Oak Baby Saga is HAIL STORM The hail yesterday was the biggest I have seen in 20 years in Minneapolis
Because the tree had been eaten to shreds, I thought it was a goner. I cut it off at the base this winter, thinking we'd have to try something else. But then this spring...it came back! It put up several vigorous looking stems. They were so green & happy, we decided to see what would happen
so the rabbits might be having their own Watership Down saga, i'm not sure. i don't have a great rabbit picture, so here is a picture of the dog who has consistently found nests of baby rabbits in our yard.
but THEN we drastically underestimated the rabbits, and in winter they completely girdled not just the trunk of the tree, but pulled down & got most of the branches too. this was def my fault b/c i didn't fence the oak baby. but also, we saw trees girdled as never before all around the neighborhood
It was a little bit of a Charlie Brown tree, not super straight, but we thought it was super cute! We planted it ourselves. My husband injured his hand digging the hole because it involved chopping through v daunting remaining maple roots. We also had to dig up a spikenard that miraculously survived
Then last fall we found out about the Minneapolis Tree Sale, this is such a great thing! Seems like sometimes it happens in the spring, and sometimes in the fall, and sometimes both? Anyway you can get small and large yard trees for super affordable. We got a baby bur oak tree for $30.
The Saga of Oak Baby! Last summer we had to cut down the Norway Maple in our front yard, because it was falling apart structurally. A huge branch had fallen off, and only nearly avoided smashing our neighbor's car. We were super sad. Here it is being enormous in the spring several years ago
We have quite a few of these babies - they seem to like anything that looks vaguely like celery or parsley - lovage & golden alexander
Ours neighbors wisteria is fully decorating our side of the fence too, I’m for it it looks amazing. Wasn’t sure how much bees use it but saw a giant queen bee partaking this morning
