And finally for the Readathon challenge ... I tried to write a book and failed. (Couldn't manage it with the full-time job, two kids and pregnancy fatigue.) I'm using my DNF award for this. It'll be called "People With Mortgages" if I ever finish it.

In a perfect world, or even a slightly better one, this wouldn’t be the way that Angelica Price met her fiance’s daughter and ex-wife.
Originally, Derek’s plane was supposed to leave Heathrow late last night and arrive at Dulles in the afternoon. Then he was hit with a one-hour delay that turned into four hours, and then turned into the entire flight getting cancelled until the next day. When Derek called to tell Angelica the shitty news, he explained that he had already asked Heather if she could bring their daughter Layla over tomorrow. Unfortunately, Heather was already an hour into the drive from New Castle in Delaware to Damascus in Maryland and she said there was no way she was paying the Baltimore toll a second time.
“So she’s still coming today?” Angelica asked, rubbing her temples as she sat at their new kitchen table.
“I’m pretty sure,” Derek said, his voice sounding choppy over his rented phone. “Heather said she and Kayla would probably stop for lunch so that gives you a little extra time, but … I think she’ll be showing up soon.”
“Any chance she changes her mind?” Angelica asked.
“Probably not,” Derek said. “She said she’s got her own flight out to Buffalo tomorrow afternoon and needs the packing time.”
Fuck my life, Angelica thought to herself, then added in a, and fuck the airlines for good measure, even though she knew every air traffic controller in America was basically in the same shitty situation she was in right now.
Well, kind of … at least they still had their jobs.
“I’m really sorry I can’t be there with you,” Derek said. “Trust me, nobody wants to be home more than me.”
Angelica snorted. She lifted the back of her left hand in front of her face and slowly rotated her hand back and forth so the light fixture above the table would make the diamonds on her engagement ring sparkle. “I know I’d rather spend a day alone at a hotel in London than an afternoon with your ex-wife.”

“She won’t be there the whole afternoon,” Derek insisted. “I mean, don’t push her out the door without offering her something to drink …”
Angelica squeezed her left hand into a fist. “Do you know me?”
“I’m just saying. She’ll probably see herself out within the hour. If you want you can time it, we can make a bet on it …”
Angelica rolled her eyes. She got tired of sitting at the kitchen table and got up to pace around the island counter, her eyes noting the dishes in the sinks and the used single-serve coffee pods that had been left out as she walked. “What about Layla? Is she really going to be OK staying over with me?”
”Why wouldn’t she be?”
“Because I’m the trifling hoe who stole her Daddy?” Angelica asked in a voice that she hoped came across as teasing, but …
Derek let out a long, rough noise, somewhere between a sigh and a moan of aggravation. “Angie, you know that’s not what happened.”
”It doesn’t matter what happened, it’s what she probably thinks.”

Another thing for the Readathon within the Readathon I finished … this TBR game I made.

Sharing something I wrote for a reading challenge within a reading challenge. Prompt was "Write a Poem About Reading."

Reading Dr. Seuss to my Sons
By Rebecca Henely-Weiss

Isn’t this the Place I wanted To Go?
”What do you want to be when you grow up?”
“A writer!” I said, because my favorite thing was reading.
And I read a lot of Dr. Seuss …

But what was I reading, really?
Rhymes and simple words and moral lessons,
Delivered through drawings of furry, saggy monsters.
I don’t draw like that.
I don’t write like that.

Still, the books are good fun that is funny,
As the old doctor once wrote …
No, no, they were always more than that:
First stories, first rhymes, first morals.

A recording of me at 2-years-old, reciting the lines of “Grinch”
is locked on an unplayable VHS tape.
It’s mirrored in a video of my then 2-year-old son locked on The Cloud
His high-pitched tones almost rendering indecipherable:
“How do you do? Would you like to shake hands with Thing One and Thing Two?”

Our early stories shine gold in our memories,
But one former child’s treasure is another grown-up’s pablum.
And gold can develop tarnish, enshrinement covered in oobleck.
I know too much — the racist drawings, the affair, his first wife’s suicide
My younger son watches that horrible Lorax movie a lot.

One can’t really be faithful 100%.
More stories come, more writers come.
The 2-year-old’s hat-wearing cat
Is replaced with the 7-year-old’s underwear superhero.
I have read a lot in four decades.

And yet my younger son learns to read
Connecting the “up” and the “pup”
And the “hop” and the “pop”
And while I may not have gotten
to The Place I want To Go
When he reads I remember where I’ve been …
