My grandpa was a WWII vet. He was a quiet guy with a gentle way. Got stabbed up, got a Purple Heart, and never talked about the war. Big Billy Pilgrim vibes, overall. As a middle aged man he secretly wrote poetry and little snippets like this one, which we found long after he passed.
