for anyone interested lol: my thesis is about trying to figure out a metaphysics of gender - what kind of thing it is, how it works - from marxist work on value and social difference

Within metaphysical enquiry into gender, there is a broad acknowledgment of an inheritance from
materialist theorising. Guided by a desire for philosophical work to address both the present conditions of
oppression and subordination, and the possibility that the social world might be transformed for the
better, many philosophers of gender share a commitment to advancing accounts of gender that are guided
by the broad principle of theorising gender as a product of our real social relations and their unjust
organisation. However, the analytic philosophy of gender has lacked a sustained engagement with Marxist
philosophy, and while it shares many political commitments with the materialist and Marxist traditions,
it has not encountered and grappled with many of its core philosophical ideas. The task of this thesis is to
produce an ontological account of gender through a reading of Marxist philosophical work, and therefore
to examine how a methodological commitment to historical materialism might transform a theoretical
approach to gender, both in its methods of inquiry and its theoretical content.
Working through the articulation of several concepts key to the philosophy of gender in its practical
activity – centrally, reproduction, performativity and value – and in exploring both the specific historical
cases of the reproductive economies of contemporary trans life and chattel slavery in the colonial United
States, I advance an account of gender as a chaotic abstraction. This account offers the theoretical tools to
express gender’s entwinement with value relations, and works towards a general account of the
interrelation between the categories of social difference and political economy.
