Strange coincidence, being on the Transpennine Way in relatively flat Humberside. This was on a #SlowWays route between Hornsea and Hull. Merseyside 176 miles away.

#SlowWays between Hornsea and Hull, a disused railway drawn with a ruler on the map. Set legs to automatic and enjoy vast skies and being surrounded by flocks of swallows. Watch the Harvest in progress. Thistle seed and butterflies compete for the nonchalant traveller award.

Another vanishing point. A very straight path lined by parched grass and green bushy vegetation. Unripe plums and elder berries.

A crumbling platform with trees on it waiting for a train that will not come, they are patient. The same path continues to vanish into the distance.

Ah! A simple bench to rest, yes the path continues. But look a small wooden house stands against the leg of the bench under the seat. Fairies? Elves? They'll stay inside in this heat.

New Addington to Orpington #SlowWays A walk that would have been better in cooler weather, but lovely nevertheless. A mix of aircraft seen close to Biggin Hill.

Very welcome shade. A sloping path alongside a wire fence. Trees arch overhead. Dark green ivy in the foreground bright green hazel ahead.

Track going down a gentle slope. Wire fence and a parched open field to the right, hedgerow to the left. Fields rise in the background.

Rickety stile frames a wide grassy path full of wild flowers. Wild oregano, wild carrot, poppies, thistles, yarrow.

Super #SlowWays walk from New Addington to Selsdon. Orchids always catch the eye.

Roots like the feet of giant birds (dinosaurs?) Claw across a dirt path.

Woking to Cobham #SlowWays Another varied and interesting walk over different terrains and landscapes. Linear walks tend to have greater variety as, by definition, they do not return to the same place. No déjà vu!

The octagonal Semaphore Tower at Chatley Heath. A tall brick building on a hill, a stout mast on the top contains 'flags' that could be raised and lowered to send messages.

Ockham Common. A path, sandy as a beach (Palaeogene Bagshott sand). Low scrub land, perfect for lizards, with sparsely spaced tall pine trees.
Near the UK's first Land bridge, over the A3.

An old straight path heading into Woking. A lush, tree-lined tunnel through farmland and golf couses.

#PostboxSaturday in Green Street Green. Bonus Coal Post.

A standard red GR pillar post box stands on grey asphalt pavement. Next to it is an older, shorter, white pillar, not dissimilar in design, a Corporation of London badge is on it. A Coal Post. The post box is, therefore, 12-18 miles from London.

Old industrial, regeneration and new build. Such an interesting walk from Peckham to London Bridge. #SlowWays Lonpec. Much of it along the old Surrey Canal, now filled in and turned into a green corridor through the city (more in Alt text). So much to see.

In 1801 a 40 feet wide canal was dug from Surrey Quays in Rotherhithe, reaching Peckham in 1826.

The Canal known then as the Grand Surrey Canal, became a hub of industry with horse-drawn barges bringing timber for the construction industry and limestone to be made into cement.
The Canal authorities generated income from tolls and fishing licences. In Victorian times a local pub hired rowing boats while swimming and illegal dog racing along the townath drew small crowds and the attention of "the law.

In the 20th Century the industries along its bank dwindled and in 1974 the Canal was finally drained to eliminate the danger of people faling in and drowning
Little now remains of the canal except Willowbrook and Commercial Way Bridges These still bear grooves in the stone work worn by the tow-ropes of the horse-drawn barges

From 1995 Southwark Council set about regenerating the canal area, in particular the canal head which became the site of today's Peckham Square

Long narrow road. The Shard dominates the skyline. What would have been industrial units under the arched rail bridge is now trendy shops and coffee houses. The cleaned brickwork looks beautiful.

Perfect day for the monthly litter picking organised by Friends of the Welsh Harp. All along the reservoir, a SSSI, and on the Capital Ring. @ldnloop-capring.bsky.social

A large wooden hut with an umbrella-shaded picnic table. Tea and biscuits. Volunteers relax, and swap stories after picking up litter around the area.

New fingerpost for #FingerpostFriday. Pointing to a new bridge over the A3, the first land bridge for wildlife in the UK. Human wildlife can use it too.

New wooden fingerpost next to a wide tarmac path/road which snakes right to a bridge. To the left the post is on sandy scrub land which continues over the bridge. Keep off! This is for sand lizards! Says the notice on the post.

Found another BST sundial today on the Thames Path on the North Bank of the Thames. Does not say that it is BST! 📸 taken 09: 29 BST.

Polar sundial shown head on. The vertical gnomon looks like a line. The 'dial' is linear either side of the gnomon. Shadow to the left (sun to the right, East) at 09:30. 25.5.2026.

New #SlowWays route between Charing Cross and Monument. Using the Bazalgette Embankment, the first new embankment in London for 150 years, which is now open after years of works. Improves the ThamesPath @thamespathnt.bsky.social here too. Great walk, so much history to see.

Orpswa2, Swanley to Orpington ##SlowWays Quite a varied walk, so interesting. Views of the city. Views of crops wading through rapeseed. Refreshing. Thunder clouds threatened impotently.

An urban walkway. Tarmac path covered in soft petal,seed detritus and moss. Fence to the right shrubs to thr left. Bristol variant (red) hawthorn blossom arches above.

Messy plant growth almost hides a stile. The stile is thin wood, wobbley, insecure, ill made. Feels like a trap, not a trail.

Rape! The planting. Lots of it an almost invisible path heads straight ahead. Tall plants, you could loose a child here!

Chislehurst to Orpington #SlowWays Chiorp3 a lovely walk through ancient woodland. Follows the #LondonLoop for a while. Memorial to William Willett, builder & BST advocate, who gave Petts Wood to the nation.

Tall square stone pillar in memory of William Willett promoter of BST. On the back is a BST sundial. It's located in Petts Wood which he brought for the public, now owned by the National Trust.

An open slightly raised path flanked by bracken. On either side heather is growing, planted for biodiversity. Heather, once common in the South East of England has become rare.

Long tarmac path dissappears downhill between fences. An alleyway, a ginnel, a snicket, a passage, a twittern, a cut-through.....
