Not that long ago in Washington DC (June 15, 1998)—The band was at the National Day Of Action For Tibet Rally, where they performed “Fall On Me” and “Losing My Religion” on the steps overlooking the United States Capitol’s West Lawn.
It was a super-memorable weekend for many reasons. Lucky for all of us, filmmakers Emer Patten & Nick Wickham were there capturing the action for the film, This Way UP, and these are relevant snippets from the day—full film is available on the 25th anniversary edition of UP, released in 2023.
30 years ago this weekend marked the beginning of the Tibet Freedom Concerts for the Milarepa Foundation, first in San Francisco and then every summer for the next several years. R.E.M. played at the 3rd Tibet Freedom show, at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC…
