🚨 1 WEEK TO GO: MILITARISM AND THE POLITICS OF EDUCATION Our free online workshop will explore the dangerous influence of militaries on the education sector. Sign up now 👇🧪 📆 TUESDAY 26 MAY 2026, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM BST www.sgr.org.uk/events/milit...
Governments asking citizens to drive and fly less while ads for polluting products and services run freely = mixed messaging. A fossil fuel ad ban is the "low-hanging fruit." Backed by science, supported by the public.👇🧪 static1.squarespace.com/static/5ebd0...
Militaries consume massive amounts of fossil fuels. Militarism drives conflict and climate change. This Earth Day, let's advocate for a world where resources are invested in clean energy, not warfare. 🌱💡🧪 @demilitarizeday.bsky.social #EarthDay #MoveTheMoney #GDAMS2026 #WarCostsUsTheEarth

This Earth Day 2026 @sportpositive.bsky.social has released a bumper episode of The Climate of Sport dedicated to the climate impacts of FIFA World Cup 2026. The episode features an interview with SGR’s own Stuart Parkinson. 🧪 open.spotify.com/episode/7zlL... #EarthDay
6/ Put together, the damage adds up: 🏔️ 5.5 km² of snow cover lost (that’s 3,000 olympic-sized ice hockey rinks!) 🧊 34 million tonnes of glacier ice gone All from one Winter Olympics and a few high-carbon sponsors.
This year we've made headlines on the carbon footprint of football, exposed the militarisation of STEM education, and highlighted the links between militarism and emissions... Support our work and help us have an even greater impact in 2026! www.peoplesfundraising.com/donation/sgr... 🧪
The climate crisis and inequality are intertwined, and while tech can help, it can also deepen divides. Emily Ghosh explores what an equitable transition would look like in the age of polluter and cyber elites. 🧪
The AI boom promises convenience, but at what cost? Award-winning science communicator and author Dr Simon Clark argues that the energy and water demands of the requisite data centres are enormous, and that this poses great risks in a grid yet to fully decarbonise. 🧪 #AI
James Parr, founder and CEO of Trillium Technologies, makes the case that tech is never neutral, and that while AI can solve some of our greatest challenges, the notion of ‘AI for good’, left unchallenged, also risks harm. 🧪 #AI
SGR’s Dr Stuart Parkinson sketches out three areas where the interests of the polluter and cyber elites overlap to undermine human security and prosperity: energy intensification, deregulation & militarisation. Campaigners across climate, peace and human rights must unite to challenge them. 🧪
Our first speaker, Astrid Nilsson Lewis (Oxfam Sweden), makes the case that extreme wealth fuels climate breakdown, with polluter elites keeping us hooked on fossil fuels while the poorest pay the highest price. Astrid argues that it’s up to governments to break this cycle. 🧪
🚨Polluter and Cyber Elites - A lethal Alignment? This year's conference explores where the interests of the far right tech bros and major polluters coincide - and what we can do to challenge them! Join us on Wednesday 15th October, 16:00 - 18:00 BST www.tickettailor.com/events/scien... 🧪
SGR has joined 100s of organisations and individuals in signing the joint appeal to world leaders on this International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. Sign the appeal below.👇 Peace is in our hands. www.nuclearabolitionday.org/joint-letter #NuclearAbolitionDay 🧪

🚨TOMORROW: How does militarism drive the climate crisis, and why is it ignored in UN climate talks? SGR's Stuart Parkinson will join global experts making a feminist call for demilitarisation in the UN climate process. 📆 19th September, 2PM UTC Sign up now: us06web.zoom.us/webinar/regi... 🧪
7/ If increased spending continues, the cumulative climate impact will be massive. If NATO members averaged 3.5% GDP for a decade, it would add the equivalent of the annual greenhouse gas emissions of Brazil, the world’s 5th largest emitter.
6/ Recent military spending commitments paint an even bleaker picture. NATO’s new target of spending 3.5% of GDP would add another 132 million tonnes CO₂e annually – more than the emissions of Chile or Oman.
3/4 At Scientists for Global Responsibility we stand in solidarity with our US colleagues, and will express our support for them by joining the National March opposing Trump's visit to the UK on 17th September. 🧪
#Hiring: Campaigner on militarisation of science education. 🧪 SGR is seeking a UK-based campaigner to work on a new project challenging the militarisation of science and technology education in UK universities and schools! www.sgr.org.uk/pages/vacanc... Apply by: 5pm on Wednesday 30th July 2025.
Nuclear weapons do not make us more secure—they bring unimaginable devastation and divert resources from our urgent needs. True security will come from green jobs and investing in our communities. (Image from @cnduk.bsky.social protest at BAE Shipyard in Barrow, 22/03/25)
Our latest report exposes the ugly truth about the beautiful game. ⚽ Emissions from football are roughly the same size as a wealthy country like Austria. 🤯 As much as 75% of this comes from polluting sponsorship deals. Report below 👇 www.newweather.org/wp-content/u... 🧪

Our research shows that 5.5% of global emissions can be attributed to the military sector G20 leaders meet today against a backdrop of wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, stalled COP29 negotiations, and terrifying climate headlines. Military emissions must take centre stage. @unep.bsky.social 🧪
