I was with Lindsey last week at the NATO Summit in Türkiye. At a private dinner at the Ambassador’s residence, he was working every Senator on a strategy to end the war in Ukraine. Typical Lindsey.

Lindsey was part of every important policy issue and an indispensable player in every Senate ‘gang’. He was a fierce Republican partisan one day and a key bipartisan ally the next.

When I was Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he was the Ranking Republican. His word was good—no cheap shots.

He knew the Dream Act was my most important bill. He was the only Republican who would cosponsor it for years. I will never forget it.

Loretta and I send our condolences to Lindsey’s family and legion of friends in South Carolina and around the world.

“What is the reality of women in creative music (?)—or at least, what observations can be made with regard to the participation of women in creative music? Based on my experiences, the present planet situation is designed to make it practically impossible for a woman to pursue creativity for a life’s commitment—or at least in the same context as men. It is almost impossible for a woman to secure a strong enough position in society to make a living from her work—this is true even though, in spite of the odds, there are many women who have succeeded in making their activity known and “ised.” Still, the situation women are faced with in this and previous time zones cannot be looked at as fair in comparison to the composite culture—by any means. To understand the collective factors that have produced this reality posture is to gain insight into what is really happening with the male creative community, as well as the sophistication of the controlling forces surrounding the music. This is so because the defining and controlling community that determines and regulates perception dynamics (and interpretations and/or focuses) has always dealt with women unfairly. To[…]”

My mistaken earlier skeet saying that the UHD Blu-ray of BJÖRK: CORNUCOPIA LIVE only had 1080p content and not 4k. After checking again, the program is 4k. (The menu isn't, but that wasn't what I had initially checked, so I don't know what happened other than my own misreading.)

Testifying today before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearings on the nomination of John Roberts to the position of chief justice of the United States, Wade Henderson, executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the nation’s premier civil and human rights coalition, will announce the coalition’s opposition to Roberts’ confirmation.

Stating that Roberts “failed to distance himself from the anti-civil rights positions he has advocated,” Henderson will tell the Committee that “all evidence indicates that Judge Roberts would use his undeniably impressive legal skills to bring us back to a country that most of us wouldn’t recognize: where states’ rights trump civil rights; where the federal courts or Congress can see discrimination, but are powerless to remedy it. This is not the America in which most Americans want to live.”

The claim that “our side” never targets civilians is familiar doctrine in violent states. And there is some truth to it. Powerful states, like the United States, do not generally try to kill particular civilians. Rather, they carry out murderous actions that they and their educated classes know will slaughter many civilians, but without specific intent to kill particular ones. In law, the routine practices might fall under the category of depraved indifference, but that is not an adequate designation for standard imperial practice and doctrine. It is more similar to walking down a street knowing that we might kill ants, but without intent to do so, because they rank so low that it just doesn’t matter. Thus

Clinton’s bombing of the main pharmaceutical plant in a poor African country (Sudan) might be expected to lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, as it apparently did. But since we did not aim at particular ones, there is no guilt, Western moralists assure us. And the same holds in much more extreme cases, which are all too easy to enumerate. The same is true when Israel carries out actions that it knows will kill the “grasshoppers” and “drugged roaches” who happen to infest the lands it “liberates.” There is no good term for this form of moral depravity, arguably worse than deliberate slaughter, and all too familiar.

The 31,000 traveler records were gathered by TSA's Secure Flight Program, which was created in 2007 to allow the agency to review passenger information for people who may be on U.S. government watchlists. The program was intended as a counter-terrorism measure, not to track down immigration offenders, according to the regulation outlining, opens new tab its purpose.
