Resurgence Talk: Vicki Hird – ‘Rebugging the farm’

Vicki Hird will talk about the importance of insects and other invertebrates and how we can look after them. She will also offer a sneak preview of her upcoming new book about how invertebrates talk to each other, to plants and to fungi.

Vicki is an award-winning environmental campaigner, researcher and writer working mainly in food, farming and environmental policy. She is Strategic Lead on Agriculture at The Wildlife Trusts and was Head of Sustainable Farming for Sustain: The Alliance For Better Food And Farming. Her passion for insects and the planet led to her book Rebugging the Planet, subtitled ‘The remarkable things that insects (and other invertebrates) do — and why we need to love them more’. She is a Fellow of The Royal Entomological Society.

Resurgence Earth Festivals gatherings are hosted by Georgie Gilmore, a meditation teacher who has a deep love for the Earth. Having spent a number of years teaching meditation to adults and teenagers as a way of supporting their wellbeing, Georgie now guides meditation in a way that seeks to tend to the wellbeing of both people and planet.

‘The Art of Resurgence’

To honour the 60th anniversary of Resurgence, we are presenting an exhibition at The Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon.

‘The Art of Resurgence’ explores the early days of Resurgence as a pioneering peace magazine, its transformation into an environmental charity, and the creation of The Resurgence Centre in Hartland, North Devon.

You’ll discover some of the visionaries whose ideas have been honoured in the magazine, alongside artwork and prints by artists who featured in the publication, including early works by Axel Scheffler and Jackie Morris. The exhibition features a showcase of cover images from the magazine archive going back to 1966. We are also exhibiting work by ceramicist Sandy Brown and founder of the global Craftivist Collective Sarah P. Corbett.

Resurgence summer camp 2026

Friday 10 to Sunday 12 July • Green & Away, Worcester

Experience a weekend of connection, celebration and community at Resurgence summer camp.

This year’s speakers include House of Hackney co-founder Frieda Gormley, former monk and peace activist Satish Kumar, and Network of Wellbeing founder Roger Higman.

Music will be performed by an incredible line-up of artists, including Dragonsfly, Martha Tilston and Natalie Fée, and Fiona Eadie and Diana Sanders will bring the oral tradition to the festival with ancient storytelling and ecopoetry performances.

There will be a range of engaging workshops to participate in, including voice with William Tooby, reading for wellbeing with Manon Martini, ecopoetry with Diana Sanders, and 60th anniversary summer wreath-making with Emily Martin.

This gathering is limited to just 140 places, so please book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

GREENING OUR CITIES - Urban spaces might seem unlikely places for wildlife to flourish, yet new research shows that even small pockets of greenery can make a remarkable difference. A study led by ecologist Luis Mata at the University of Melbourne found that planting indigenous species in cities can rapidly restore biodiversity. In just three years, a once-disturbed lawn in Melbourne was transformed into a thriving habitat rich with insect life.

LIVING CITIES - This archival issue of Resurgence & Ecologist marked COP26 with a special issue dedicated to cities. Currently, more than half the world’s population live in cities — a number expected to rise to over two-thirds by 2030.

Cities are energy hungry and are major emitters of greenhouse gas emissions. As well as being a cause of the crisis, however, with better planning, transport and food cities are also part of the solution.

URBAN GRADENS - In this reflection on urban renewal, Satish Kumar reimagines our cities as living ecosystems rather than places separate from Nature.

From rooftop rainwater harvesting to local food grown in allotments, orchards and small urban farms, he envisions cities that nourish both people and the planet.

At present the world is in turmoil. Iran, Ukraine and Palestine are in particular facing catastrophic crises. According to the life-long peace activist Satish Kumar, these wars are unnecessary and the use of armed forces should be to prevent wars not wage wars.

Marking the launch of his latest book Peace is Possible (Bloomsbury Publishing UK, 2026) Satish Kumar will speak about peace among nations, and how peace is not only urgently needed but also how it is possible. Satish will suggest that peace is more than an absence of war but instead a way of living in harmony with each and all. He calls for us to make peace with ourselves, with nature and with all the peoples of the world. This year, in his 90th birthday celebration, Satish is reminding the world that peace is not just a distant dream but that peace is achievable here and now.

Satish Kumar is an activist and internationally renowned speaker on ecological issues. Born in India, he has been a Jain monk, nuclear disarmament advocate and pacifist. He walked 8,000 miles from India to America for peace. Now living in England, Kumar is founder and honorary president of Schumacher College, Editor Emeritus of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine and a Fellow of the Temenos Academy.
