During the two summers I did fieldwork for my degree, I lived in a deeply secluded Norwegian forest. No electricity, no running water, total isolation. It was here, in the green quietude, that I first truly experienced the subtle living spirit of the forest. #ForestFriday #Trees #Spirit #Awareness

A photograph of the cabin I lived in, located in the Solholm Fjell nature reserve in Southern Norway. No electricity, water was fetched from a nearby stream, food was prepared on a portable camping stove. Everything had to be be backpacked in on a forest trail. I would drive down from Oslo on Sunday evening, staying at the cabin while doing my field work, rain or shine, and then drive back to Oslo on the following Friday evening. I did this from May to September for approximately two years. By the end of the week, I rarely had any desire to leave the forest and return to the city.

A photograph of myself wearing my trusty hoody and a scarf on my head, trying to identify some tiny species of moss using a powerful scientific magnifying glass. What couldn’t be identified in the field was bagged and taken back to the lab for microscopic identification. My research was centered mostly on forest moss ecology and distribution.

A photograph from the Solholm Fjell nature reserve not far from the field site where I did my studies, featuring a small pond and a river leading down from a large outcrop of mostly bare rock. The Solholm Fjell nature reserve was chosen for my thesis due to the fact that there had only been negligible human activity there in the last hundred years, i.e. no habitation, farming, or logging, making it as close to virgin forest as one can find in Norway.
