President, Sojourners. New book “A More Perfect Union” available now. Passionate social justice advocate & bridge builder. Ordained Baptist minister.
My thoughts on the barrage of falsehoods in President Trump’s prime time speech on “election integrity.”
I'm excited to be moderating this important conversation next month. Mark your calendars and I hope many of you will join us! On August 12th at 1 pm ET, join @sojo.net for a timely conversation with Bishop Mariann Budde on what it means to be brave in moments that call for moral clarity.
I invite you to check out my latest article for some examples of how this semiquincentennial year can reinforce our commitment to living out Micah 6:8 and, in the process, help us make our nation’s ideals of liberty and justice for all more real for-truly-all.
Honored to attend the release of @americanprogress.bsky.social @interfaithalliance.org @americansunited.bsky.social @americanhumanist.bsky.social on Religious Liberty for All, to which I was proud to contribute some of my thoughts, both in the report and via a panel discussion today.
I hope you can join us tomorrow for a powerful conversation with @mariajstephan.bsky.social, on how faith communities can help safeguard democratic values, bridge divides, and counter authoritarian trends. More info and free registration here: sojo.net/join/events/...
Today I joined Moral Mondays at the White House and spoke about how denying voting rights is a form of violence. Since the Supreme Court effectively gutted the Voting Rights Act week, resisting redistricting efforts and voter/election protection have become a moral imperative and test of faith.
Hope folks will join me in supporting and showing out for today’s Moral Monday actions in DC and across the country! Love forward together.
My thoughts on the egregiously wrong Louisiana v. Callais decision which further guts the Voting Rights Act.
Sharing some remarks at today’s pray in at the US Capitol for peace. It is time to end this unlawful, reckless, and immoral war in Iran. Pope Leo said it with such moral clarity yesterday, “woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military and political gain”!
Child well being is a moral and religious imperative. Grateful to be in New Mexico as part of Independent Sector board retreat. Met today with Lt. Governor Morales and learned about how the state has ensured universal access to early childhood education, something every state can and must do!
Grateful to join Maryknoll and other Catholic and Christian orgs for today’s Stations of the Cross witness as we cast the story of Jesus’ final days in today’s context and meditated on the social sins of our own times. Powerful way to pray and speak truth to power on Good Friday.
Our faith calls on us to resist repression and the idolatry of worshipping and supporting unjust leaders. Here’s my message from No Kings III in La Mesa, CA.

Sharing my reflections on Tuesday’s State of the Union, including President Trump’s alarming rhetoric and efforts to subvert and undermine the midterm elections. www.sojo.net/articles/opi...
We’re raising the moral temperature in Congress, demanding they reject any additional funding for ICE or DHS.
Speaking at the Praying with our Feet vigil as we demand that Congress reject any additional funding for ICE.
My summary of my latest article for @sojo.net. You can read the full piece here: sojo.net/articles/opi...
My thoughts on the murder of Alex Pretti by ICE agents in Minnesota. Those being harmed and killed by ICE are all precious children of God and made on God’s image. This violence against our immigrant neighbors and against the people standing up for justice and compassion breaks God’s heart.
At today’s ICE Out of Minnesota march and rally, where the temperature of -20 degrees Fahrenheit has not dampened the turnout one bit.
Grateful to join other faith leaders for an interfaith service at Temple Israel in Minneapolis. History has its eyes on Minneapolis. People of faith and conscience are showing up with courage and love to get ICE out of Minnesota.
Here in Minnesota to stand alongside local faith leaders as they demand that ICE cease its cruel and unlawful actions and leave the community.
I’m grateful to @fianational.bsky.social for bringing together faith leaders in DC today to denounce ICE’s occupation of Minneapolis.
Some thoughts on this #mlkday from #reneenicolegood’s memorial site.
Honored to join Bishop Royster and Faith in Action for a weekly Wed. Witness outside the White House. As I shared today, while the president shamelessly promises “reckoning and retribution” in Minneapolis, we must respond with a revival of courage, love, and solidarity.
Light for the Way is out today! Five decades of spiritual wisdom from generations of @sojo.net writers--you can get your copy at sojo.net/light. I'm so grateful for everyone on our staff that worked to bring this book into being and to @broadleafbooks.bsky.social for believing in this project.
As we say goodbye (maybe even good riddance) to 2025, I’m reminded just how much prayer has served as an essential balm and strong tower in the midst of such a trying and tumultuous year. I’m deeply grateful that we have a staff team that believes in the power of prayer: lnkd.in/eKJh_H3b
