Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, launched a campaign to dismantle the international criminal court (ICC) on Monday, claiming the global tribunal was interfering with US military and law enforcement operations at the risk of American sovereignty.

Rubio invoked images of US border patrol agents and elected leaders being “dragged before an international court” and tried by judges from around the world in a lengthy op-ed published in the Wall Street Journal Monday.

“If we stand idle, all of them will be at the mercy of foreign judges, thousands of miles away – facing the constant risk of prosecution and even imprisonment for the so-called ‘crime’ of defending their own country,” Rubio warned in a companion video posted to X.

Christopher Newman remembers seeing campus police officers as he walked into a human resources office at Harvard University, but he didn’t imagine that they were there for him.

It was July 2024, and Newman had just turned in the results of a two-month-long internship with the Harvard University Archives: an annotated bibliography for the landmark 2022 Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery Initiative report, which detailed the university’s ties to slavery across three centuries. He completed his project on Friday, 26 July, and on Monday, he said he received an email that HR wanted to meet with him.

After that meeting, the officers escorted Newman out of the building, told him he was banned from campus and denied his request to collect his belongings from his office, he told the Guardian. He said he was told that a flight back home was booked for that afternoon. “I was asking too many questions,” Newman said, “veering off of the proverbial beaten path”.

“There is an absolute direct connection from Antigua and what was going on there to the slave trade at Harvard,” he said he told the group. “We should really start looking into this Antigua thing, because there’s some teeth here.” But he was met with radio silence. “It seemed like nobody was really trying to hear that,” he said.

In its 2022 report, the university had broadly delineated its historical ties to the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica, among others, mainly by tracing the actions of key alumni who were merchants and planters. What Newman was suggesting, though, was that the university look to the present and consider its current-day responsibilities to nations such as Antigua and Barbuda.

It has also occluded something deeper: the human decisions that led to the killing of between 175 and 180 people, most of them girls between the ages of seven and 12. Someone decided to compress the kill chain. Someone decided that deliberation was latency. Someone decided to build a system that produces 1,000 targeting decisions an hour and call them high-quality. Someone decided to start this war. Several hundred people are sitting on Capitol Hill, refusing to stop it. Calling it an “AI problem” gives those decisions, and those people, a place to hide.

The building in Minab had been classified as a military facility in a Defense Intelligence Agency database that, according to CNN, had not been updated to reflect that the building had been separated from the adjacent Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps compound and converted into a school, a change that satellite imagery shows had occurred by 2016 at the latest. A chatbot did not kill those children. People failed to update a database, and other people built a system fast enough to make that failure lethal. By the start of the Iran war, Maven – the system that had enabled that speed – had sunk into the plumbing, it had become part of the military’s infrastructure, and the argument was all about Claude. This obsession with Claude is a kind of AI psychosis, though not of the kind we normally talk about, and it afflicts critics and opponents of the technology as fiercely as it does its boosters. You do not have to use a language model to let it organise your attention or distort your thinking.

In order to prevent the UAE from coming out publicly opposing the genocide in Gaza, the US ignored an ongoing genocide in Sudan and a massacre it KNEW WOULD HAPPEN and could have prevented.

The US had issues – its entire Darfur team, sources said, was wiped out by the USAID cuts while senior state department officials were briefed to stop US president Donald Trump meddling in Sudan.

“Keep Darfur off the president’s desk,” said a diplomatic source, adding that keeping the UAE on side over Gaza was a priority.

As El Fasher’s demise approached, Minnawi engaged in frantic, futile diplomacy. Trump’s Africa envoy, Massad Boulous, never picked up the phone.

Two days before El Fasher’s fall, hope emerged. Boulous met UAE, Saudi and Egyptian officials in Washington.

Attempts, however, to discuss El Fasher were vetoed – the UAE, sources said, threatened to storm out if the city was mentioned.

The US state department blocked intelligence assessments relating to El Fasher that would have triggered an intervention to prevent genocide.

Investigators assembled compelling publicly unavailable evidence that the attack on Geneina was an ethnic rampage: El Fasher was next.

State department officials blocked the assessment. Sections of the report were requested to be deleted.

“There was an intelligence assessment that would have triggered a mass atrocity and genocide determination. That effort was stopped,” said the source. They believe the warning was stifled to protect a US mutual defence agreement with the UAE.

A US state department spokesperson said they do not comment on “alleged intelligence reports”.

The UK was similarly downplaying Darfur as a concern. Weeks after US officials blocked its assessment, the UK government revised its view of the 2003-05 Darfur genocide.

A confidential briefing for MPs, circulated last December, stated that when Sudan’s war began, Darfur was formally classed as genocide.

But when the Islamic State’s targeting of Iraq’s Yazidi minority was added to the UK’s official list in August 2023, Darfur was removed.

“It silently – inexplicably – removed the Darfur genocide,” stated the briefing.

These are only a few of the many cases in the last two years that suggest people are encouraged to self-harm or suicide after talking to chatbots.
