Going to the poster session today at #AMSMadisonSummit? Check out my OU MS student's (Gabe Cenker - Poster 249) CM1 sims of TC Beryl rainband supercells! Initial results reveal fascinating impacts of low-level dry layers, pushing back on traditional views on their role in TC supercell outbreaks.
For those at #AMSMadisonSummit who missed our @ametsoc.org BRAID/Coriolis QG coffee break, feel free to reach out (or find me) for a Madison LGBTQ+ Local guide and info about social events later this week! 🏳️🌈
For QLCS lovers at AMS Madison, you're in luck! @drkelsbritt.bsky.social will be sharing her innovative WoFS QTor work and later, I'll be talking about the current state & limitations of QLCS mesovortex forecasting. Come join us! Britt (10:45 AM) - Madison Ballroom A Brown (1:45 PM) - Hall of Ideas
I had the honor earlier today to present at the last @nws.noaa.gov Foundation Friday webinar diving into the evolving landscape of QLCS mesovortex prediction. Hoping this is just the beginning of many future discussions on how to advance QLCS hazard forecasting and extend lead time ⛈️
Great discussion this afternoon w/ @amsearlycareer.bsky.social about navigating career highs/lows and cultivating passion in a challenging science landscape. For any students or early career folks who couldn't attend, I encourage you to watch the recording and reach out to panelists with questions!
Join us tomorrow 11 AM CT (12 PM ET) to dive into an exploration of discovering your passion and navigating early career challenges in atmospheric science! Register Here: bit.ly/4npmDgN
📢 One more day to submit abstracts to the AMS Madison Summit - including our joint session with @ams-sls-stac.bsky.social & Cloud Physics exploring recent advances in severe storm/high impact weather microphysics. We're accepting oral & poster submissions & have already seen topics such as... (1/2)
I'm ecstatic to announce that I will be joining the UND Dept. of Atmospheric Sciences this fall as an Assistant Professor! This huge milestone is the culmination of a dream over a decade in the making - one that's taken me across 3 (soon 4) states, 3 degrees, and 2 postdoctoral experiences... (1/2)
Though AMS Annual is still fresh in our minds, the abstract deadline for deadline for the @ametsoc.org Madison Summit is rapidly approaching. With that in mind, I'm excited to share our joint session hosted between @ams-sls-stac.bsky.social & Cloud Physics! (1/2) ⛈️🌧️❄️
And in a blink, another AMS has come & gone! From getting an Editor's Award, to sharing new research, and reconnecting with countless friends - the week was a joyful whirlwind. With each passing year, I hold onto these moments a little longer, thankful for the folks I get to share this field with ❤️
For all my QLCS enthusiasts, come see my poster this afternoon (going on now until 4:30), synthesizing some recent project to reassess how we look at bow echoes within the context of mesovortex formation! 🌪️
📢 Fellow LGBTQIA+ peeps attending #AMS2026! 🏳️🌈 Coriolis has compiled some local resources to help optimize your experience here in Houston! Check out our local guide for more info (including our events this week), along with other community resources/maps 🗺️
Though a small milestone to some, today I passed the century mark in citations! Since my 1st paper, I've grown immensely as a scientist - in my interests, my writing, and so on. As I move into the next phase of my career (details coming soon!), I'm excited to see how my science continues to grow ✍
When @alexismasters.bsky.social gives you farm fresh eggs you farm fresh eggs, you put them to good use!! Improvised a crustless quiche, with turkey sausage, caramelized red onion, spinach, sundried tomatoes, and feta 🥚🐔
Well even though PSU football is a perennial disappointment, my gameday goodies weren't 🏈chicken bacon ranch dip, PSU old fashioned's with PA rye, and a whiteout vanilla creme cake (Side Note: who's down to go in on Franklin's buyout? 😅 💰)
Not sure if it was a complex shelf cloud or an embedded mesocyclone, but the sights in north Norman early this morning were other-worldly 🛸⛈️
Earlier this week I entered a chocolate cherry cake at our local Elizabethtown fair - it didn't end up placing, but I still thought it was too pretty not to share! 🍫🍒
Get you friends whose dessert game is as 🔥 as mine. Our spread has: 1. A stunning fruit tart (from @arianaelena97.bsky.social ) w/ a silky vanilla cream 🍓 2. A luxuriously smooth, cinnamon-kissed flan (from @bxmatilla.bsky.social) 🍮 3. Honey butter cornbread cookies (from yours truly) 🌽
And *whew* did Boise show out - so much great food infused w/ Northwest quirkiness, Basque influences, and a few potatoes for good measure! While the conference over, I know I will cherish these memories - both personally & professionally - for a very long time (5/5) ❤️
A BIG thanks to the amazing AMS & Boise Centre staff, our Mesoscale STAC Committee ( @ams-meso.bsky.social), our student presentation judges, and our session chairs who made all of this possible. The connections I made this week, some unexpected, have truly filled my heart to the brim (4/5)
The conference was a delight from start to finish - so many intriguing talks, delivered by everyone from excited undergrads to respected senior scientists. The numerous conversations and community were inspiring, celebrating the victories of my peers and sharing in our collective challenges (3/5)
The months leading up to the conference were a tumultuous whirlwind of abstracts, virtual meetings, changing plans, and roadblocks, compounded by a number of personal matters. But somehow, someway, everything coalesced into a beautiful week in Boise that brought my AMS journey full circle (2/5)
🧵A decade ago, I went to my 1st @ametsoc.org conference. The enormity of the going's on was almost dizzying - a sensory overload for a junior excited to carve out a path in the field. Fast forward to this past week, when I chaired the AMS Mesoscale Conference w/ Dr. Daniel Kirshbaum in Boise (1/5)
Day 1 of #AMS21Meso is in the books! Lots of awesome science shared and discussed, with beautiful Boise weather to boot. Plus, it's always a good day when you get to brainstorm QLCS tornado science with @jimcantore.bsky.social 🌪️proud of the @ams-meso.bsky.social team - onwards to Tuesday!
Happy Pride Month to all my fellow LGBTQ+ friends and allies! My name is Matt Brown, I'm a severe storms researcher who's equal parts ✨ gay ✨ and 🤓 geeky 🤓. I know what it feels like to wonder if the world would be better without you, so this month let us celebrate queer joy and belonging ❤️
And some more...(2/2) 5. Banana bread w/ a salted oat-pecan swirl 🍌 6. Dark chocolate pistachio shortbread 🍫 7. Tahini cinammon roll blondies w/ cream cheese icing 😍 8. Egg-free chocolate torte with raspberry jam filling and chocolate glaze 💋

On this, the first Mother's Day without our pupper, I gifted my mom a watercolor painting of one of her favorite photos of Zoey and I (from Etsy - I'm not *that* artistically inclined!) She may not be here with us anymore physically, but Zoey will always have a special place in our hearts ❤️
But even so, I know she is free from pain now, excitedly meeting the heavenly family members we talked about so often that she didn’t get to meet in her lifetime. Thanks for being a good girl and the best of friends. Until we meet again, Zoey ❤️ (4/4)
