Excerpt from *The Futurological Congress*: Spent the whole afternoon ingesting a most remarkable work, *The History of Intellectronics.* Who'd ever have guessed, in my day, that digital machines, reaching a certain level of intelligence, would become unreliable, deceitful, that with wisdom they would also acquire cunning? The textbook of course puts it in more scholarly terms, speaking of Chapulier's Rule (the law of least resistance). If the machine is not too bright and incapable of reflection, it does whatever you tell it to do. But a smart machine will first consider which is more worth its while: to perform the given task or, instead to figure some way out of it. Whichever is easier.

The overall visual feeling is one of infinite memetic vectors sweeping out to a vanishing point, lying comfortably skew to each other in some n-dimensional space. Kitsch dog pictures cover the fan of a dog-themed room; a comfortable armchair covered in patches of denim offers the weary traveler a waypoint in a mysterious hall; prosaic functionality and declarative labeling of drawers are totally at ease with warm and self-confident whimsy; recursively fine detail plays against broad impressionistic curves; nouveau riche Florida McMansion armor on the outside lovingly holds in the jiggling flesh of the riotous nonlinear New Weird story within (the “scale” of which is cheekily foreshadowed by a large, tacky, but appealing fish-shaped pool).

It struck me that birds sitting on deciduous trees must find it odd and disorienting to suddenly see so far after the leaves fall, so I wrote a little poem about it (full text in alt)

Title: November on the Wing

My little perch is sunny now, and now I see
A half a mile at least
Through loose weaves of branches, bare
Of loves and foes of summer past
Of dense lush leaves that breathe and hide
The architecture of this wood;
My tiny prey revealed now to me, and I to it.
How strange this richly curtained world
Burned red gold glory, then was gone.
First with an offering of fruit to Earth,
And then the scaffolding alone.
But as I flit, and as I peck, I taste
How slow and cool both roots and limbs
Seek some unbidden spring.
