I have to say, this is not a terribly convincing statistic for anyone wanting to claim that this is the common sense and obvious position.

Once again wondering what people think when they post this kind of thing on LinkedIn; starts fine but then veers into "I spent $20k on getting consultants to rewrite my essays" and dude

I lost $20,000 in savings and 4 years in one week.

For the past 4 years, I had been aiming at one thing: The big leagues.

I had it all planned. Poly, Army, Scholarship. US. Maybe get a Masters. Big Tech a few years. Then start my own company.

Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerburg. The founders and CEOs i looked up to all got into top US Colleges. Naturally, my brain tied success to making it in, obsessed with the school name and branding.

So I grinded for it.

I studied for SATs while serving Army and got 1540/1600 (not too bad given conditions). I spammed hackathons because everyone said US colleges cared about impact, built projects, got featured in newspapers, then spent $20k of my own savings earned from bitcoin on consultants to squeeze every bit out of my essays.

Decision week came.

10 applications. 10 rejections.

Looking back, I don't think the admissions officers got it wrong.

They were judging me for the game they were playing.

The problem was that I'd spent four years believing it was the only game worth winning.

College applications compress you into grades, essays, recommendations, school names, activities and some idea of "holisticness." Maybe it works for some people. Maybe it is fair.

I have seen this drive to engage more with industry from both sides and there is a vast gulf in expectations between what the government wants to happen (industry putting lots of money into research for very little return) and what industry wants (to make a profit doing work).
