Keep rereading this passage and I can't actually figure out what that last sentence is supposed to mean. "Whether your ancestors fought to protect or destroy the United States, they made it possible for you to be part of the United States (that some of them tried to destroy)."
For instance, remember that this too is written in the Declaration of Independence
Meaning is not inherent in the intention or perspective of an artist, meaning arises from the interaction of a reader/viewer with the work itself. Just because many artists and consumers believe otherwise doesn't make them right. Here is Simon Leys on Cervantes:
