Unable to work in a visit to the Merzouga Desert this month, I decided to make my own Medfouna ("buried" Berber Pizza) instead: a lamb and mushroom stuffed pastry with dill, almonds and feta baked in an oven rather than a sand pit in the Sahara. 🍽️🍜 #Medfouna #Morocco #whatscooking

Each one of these Papaver somniferum pods (opium poppy) holds over 1,000 seeds. (Possession of seed pods over 4 oz can be considered drug trafficking in some states.) We will sow these with abundance in the White House Cutting Garden.

Pieris japonica (Andromeda Shrub or Lily of the Valley Shrub) is a new addition to the White House Garden. All parts are poisonous. How perfect. The grayanotoxins affect the heart, brain and nervous system if consumed. Consuming honey from nectar of the plants results in "Mad Honey Disease."

Ok, I know this is pretty disgusting, but when I was raising kids, Halloween was a BIG deal and we had fun with it. My recipes are not nearly as good as yours - I write things down in such a way I hope to remember when I repeat them again. Your meatloaf cake is MUCH prettier than my #Feetloaf 😂

My version of the Don Angie-inspired pinwheel lasagna includes the three sauces: Italian sausage bolognese, besciamella, and San Marzano tomato sauce. I used the frilly lasagna noodles because they are so pretty when rolled up. A bit of work, but perfect for Sunday night supper. 🍽️🍜👩‍🍳

Alternating cooked lasagna noodles topped with besciamella sauce with mozzarella, parmesan and parsley, and the others with red Italian sausage bolognese sauce. Assembly: a white noodle will be placed on top of a red noodle then rolled up like a pinwheel before being placed in a baking dish with tomato sauce.

Ready to go into the oven: a baking dish with rolled pinwheel lasagna noodles in red tomato sauce. A dab of white besciamella sauce and a nugget of mozzarella cheese is placed on the top of each pinwheel.

Fresh out of the oven: baked lasagna pinwheels in red tomato sauce. The wavy noodle tips have crisped up just a bit, as the original Don Angie recipe suggests.

Plated: one lasagna pinwheel on a plate with a deep blue rim, and a side salad.

Indigofera suffruticosa 🌱🌿 was popular as a highly prized source of blue dye in the 17th and 18th centuries where it still grows wild on the north end of Georgia’s Ossabaw Island at North End Plantation, the site of a colonial-era indigo plantation. History in AltText.

In the year 1775, South Carolina exported more than one million pounds of dried indigo cakes to England. That record-high output was immediately followed by a near collapse of the industry. The commencement of the American Revolution, which followed years of simmering political tensions, permanently dismantled the traditional mercantile links between American farmers and British customers. Some South Carolina planters continued to grow indigo and to produce the dye during the eight-year war, but they had a difficult time finding customers for the product.

Whipped up a Mid-East Feast this past weekend, and we're still dining on the leftovers: pearl couscous with garbanzo beans, Little Gems with almond-lemon dressing, lamb meatballs, and a roasted beet salsa with oranges and lemons. More deets in the AltText. 🍽️🍜

Ingredients for middle eastern couscous: clockwise from top left: golden raisins soaked in Madiera, garbanzo beans, dried blueberries soaked in brandy, baby red bell pepper slices, bowl of spices, toasted almonds, and uncooked turmeric pearl couscous. A lemon half is in the middle.

I'll make sure this gets planted near the door to the White House Kitchen Garden: Pieris japonica. If consumed, expect increased heart rate, ventricular tachycardia, arrhythmias in the cardiovascular system and an increased respiratory rate. Inhalation pneumonia is frequently the cause of death.

Sweet little toxic Ranunculus hispidus is a #NativePlant in the eastern United States. Contact with the plant causes burning, itching, rash & blisters due to the acrid poisonous juices which protect it plant from animals. Would be a shame if this infiltrated the White House lawn... #PoisonousPlants
