Out in West Arnhem Land NT this week supporting Traditional Owners in discussions about complex land management. Supporting with a 3D projection augmented landscape model bringing archived cultural stories back to Country—knowledge belongs with communities.
Fuel mitigation 🔥, led mostly by Indigenous ranges, in action across the Top End. From the Kimberley to the Cape, people are completing fine-scale, cool 🔥before conditions become hot and dry. I was with WA Dept of Fire and Emergency yest workshoping the new landscape scale wheat belt 3D fire sim I developed for them. It allows people to play through fire response scenarios altering key behavior variables on the fly. A productive exchange of ideas for the co-creation of training tools.
It's been a wet summer through Central Australia, however, it was only a few months ago fire was ripping through much of this country. This Sentinel2 Sat image from a few days ago shows evidence of both. Lots of rain means lots of fuel. Will we see another fiery October?

14 million (!!) hectares burnt across Northern Australia, whilst Australia's only national tool set up to monitor these fires and provide critical operational support to people on the ground went unfunded. The federal government is increasing disaster risk across 90% of Australia. The risk is real.
Over 46 million ha burnt across the Tropical Savannas in 2025. Naturally fire-prone, these landscapes need fire, still this was a big year! The biggest fire season since 2012! The early dry and late dry seasons indicate a shift from fires that are more likely to be of low intensity to severe events.
Looking back at the fire year that was. The map-graphic shows the ten biggest fire events across Australia in 2025. Two "Terra" fires (>1million ha) burnt over 3.7 million ha. The combined total, including the 8 other "Giga" fires (>100k ha) burnt close to 10million ha in 2025.

Brilliant T-shirt campaign from the Tiwi indigenous rangers to get the community thinking about the problem of cats on Tiwi country. Cats are many times worse than climate change with regard to their biodiversity impact. Eradication is difficult but crucial. Tiwi leadership in this is great.
Australia's fire season for 2025 is pretty much over. Discussing this on Landline today. It's surprising to me how surprising this concept is. The narrative around fire in this county fails to engage with the vast and complex distribution of fire across our continent.
A brief but neat mention of Australia's peak fire season (October) on Land Line today. ABC pulled the fire spread video from this lnkd.in/gwbtsMBV site I set up to provide updated and dwnloadble animations of the fire season. Seeing stuff used and being useful is a great motivator to keep on.
..looking at the years' fire season for the Pilbara Ranger forum, and came across this just south of Roebourne. The 1st sat image from 27th Oct - 2nd the 30th, a beautiful example of how fire follows fuel and fuel follows water...but both 💧and 🔥need to flow through this country to keep it healthy.

I have been developing techniques for the automated assessment of fire events across Australia using NAFI (firenorth.org.au) data. These are the top 10 largest across Australia so far this year. 3 of them are > 1 million hectares (Terra-Fires, 100x mega fire). The year is not over.

Dry lightning storms ripped through the Great Sandy, Gibson, and Tanami deserts a few days ago. Constrained by low fuel and previous burns, these desert fires are mostly small and really quite beautiful. Sentinel 2 imagery from Sunday.
