People on nextdoor want to organize peaceful protests to protect parking on one street.

With the City Council's recent decision regarding the Hopkins Street bike lanes, many of us are deeply concerned about the loss of parking, the impact on elderly residents accessing the MLK track/pool, and local business survival. Strong citizen voices—and even peaceful protests—can make the council rethink this plan, but we need to act collectively.

Can someone step up to be the main contact to help write a formal objection letter to the city council and coordinate gathering signatures?

I am more than happy to help organize, but we need a dedicated point person to centralize the effortthis specific issue.

David The housing crises is NOT a housing crisis. It’s an affordability crises. It’s very expensive to live here, but that’s the case in other nearby towns like Pacific Heights or Mill Valley or Palo Alto yet nobody ever is picketing those towns and screaming for affordable housing!

For whatever reason, there is some sense that Oakland and Berkeley DESERVE to be affordable—it may have been at one time, but it’s not anymore. Look at any artist commune among the coast of California where people got shacks and bungalows to live and find inspiration, and those towns have all become Mendocino and Laguna Beach and even Stinson with multimillion dollar restate. It changed over time. Nobody is hollering the unfairness of affordable housing there.

The good news is that there’s ample towns nearby that ARE less expensive to live in.
I’ve lived in a a handful of them myself before settling into my current one.

And given that the recent town meeting about these “senior towers” stated that the rents for these apartments will be somewhere between $4-10k a month, I find the idea of these two massive shiny modern structures on 2-lane College Avenue as an absurd solution to any housing crisis. I don’t know one senior who could afford that…. let alone a typical resident.

And as an aside, unless you’re in Manhattan or Hong Kong, nobody wants to live in high-rises. They do make sense near CAL for student populations who have a set timeframe to exist in those structures or renters who want downtown appeals on much wider streets like Shattuck and University.

No structures built in small enclaves like Rockridge or Elmwood will ever be affordable—land costs and building costs dictate that. If you want to build “affordable housing” you need cheaper land and cheaper building costs or government subsidies. Or you do what people have done since the dawn of time, you migrate. Or commute.

Notice how many high-rises have gone up in our local vicinity with cranes on every corner, which supplied numerous units in the area and yet there is still all the screaming of a housing crisis. Nope—it’s affordability because those units are all very expensive to live in.

The average house in the Elmwood was purchased 20-50 years ago. In 1969 a cute 2 BR home was $40k.
Now retired elders face high property tax, tripled water bills, insurance difficulties & big maintenance bills. Yes- they could sell & get $2M but where could they move?
The cynical snarky attitude toward retired teachers, writers, family lawyers etc is what taints progressive politics.
