Morning came quietly.
Baltan took a moment to appreciate the sight of Eureka and Azzie curled up together before the thoughts from the previous night caught up to him. He needed to talk to Eureka. Who knew when they'd get another quiet moment, just the two—three—of them?
It would be easier if his mouth didn't keep getting dry.
Eureka acting selfishly had gotten him into the whole situation. If he hadn't brought Azzie home, Baltan would have probably spent the morning sleeping off a hangover in someone else's bed. Instead he was in an old farmer's cottage, about to walk into a potentially dangerous village, chasing a killer who should have been dead already, and trying to figure out how to tell Eureka that he could stand to be just a little more selfish.

"You really think…?" Eureka tried and failed to mask his hopefulness. When he rubbed his palms together, Baltan saw that his hands were shaking. "I'm not…I mean, when it comes to women, I've, ah…well, I've never had much luck. With this face?" He barked out a single laugh. "It's not—it's impossible. No. He can't be mine."
Baltan wanted to take Eureka's hands in his own and steady them. More than that, he wanted to hold Eureka's face and kiss the scar that ran through it, because yes, with that face, he was still handsome. Anyone who didn't see that, didn't see how good and kind and selfless to the point of stupidity he was, didn't deserve him. But he restrained himself ...

"I don't know why you're so opposed to the idea. Haven't you always wanted a family?"
"I wanted to be there for my family!" Eureka focused his gaze rigidly on a discolored patch on the blanket, the way he did when he was trying not to cry. "If Azzie is my son, that means I missed fourteen years of his life! Fourteen years, where I could have taken care of him. Instead he went through…through all of that, and who knows what else, he can barely talk now, let alone read or write—" He stopped to take a shuddering breath. "Everything is going to be so hard for him. And all the while, I could have done something about it! But I didn't." He bared his teeth. "Some father."
Baltan reached up and guided Eureka's chin so they were facing each other once again. He hated the sight of his tears. "Stop it. You didn't know."
"I should have." Eureka's voice cracked. "I don't know if I'm ready for this. I'll give Azzie the best life I can, regardless. But if he is my son, then a lot of this is my fault."

"I'll do my best to negotiate," Eureka said.
He rubbed at a spot between his right shoulder and his neck, until Baltan batted his hand away. "Let me."
After a moment's hesitation, Eureka crouched down to let Baltan work his fingers into the stiff muscles. He was tense, down to the bone. "I know this won't be easy. I didn't mean to imply it would be," Baltan said.
"I know you didn't mean anything by it, but it's a sore subject." Some of the tension was released with a small sigh. "I don't know a lot about Illdresil Gera, other than the stories my grandparents used to tell me. How did they put it…” ...
"We still need to go, to see if they are still there, and warn them if nothing else," Baltan said. "It's just a matter of figuring out how to do that without getting chased off."
"Or chasing them off," Eureka added.
Baltan patted Eureka's shoulder, having worked out at least one knot. He hoped it would make some difference, however small. "I'll do some research at the library. And we should be careful about what we say on the phone, if we use it again before this is all over. I don't know exactly who or what he's using to monitor us."

The sound of a wave, much closer than the radio speakers, caught Azzie's attention. Eureka sat on the other end of the couch, quietly reading a book. He swept his foot back and forth across the carpet in time with the album.
Azzie stretched out his own foot and gently tapped Eureka's leg with the tip of his toe. When he didn't get a reaction, he did it again, holding it there this time. Eureka turned the page of his book, paying no mind. Azzie stretched out his foot even more, pushing Eureka's leg. The longer the moment stretched on with no response, the harder Azzie pushed. Soon, he couldn't press any harder, and had to uncurl so he could get into a better position.
Once he abandoned the safety of the blanket, Eureka tapped Azzie's nose with one finger.
Azzie squeaked and covered his nose with his hands, eyes screwed shut, only to peek them open again when he realized there was no pain. Eureka was smiling, a spark of humor in his eyes.
Azzie didn't know how to respond. He flicked one ear, then the other. He didn't know if it was okay for him to attack back, but he didn't want to curl up in defense. There was no need to protect himself; Eureka wouldn't hurt him.
