It's hard to explain, but seeing people and families pulled to the side of the road and standing by their cars and staring at the sky in just enough time for my kid and I to realize it's time for the shuttle launch and to jump out ourselves to watch it... it's part of what gives me hope for humanity

Listen
the rain falls lightly
appearing from nowhere
on my windshield as I drive
my kids to ice skating lessons and the sun
shines brightly behind the drops
as we don’t talk about the holy
war being fought with our reddened money
halfway across the world
and so nearby

Take cover
I say as we walk through the
sun shower dampening our faces
and I think about the mothers
saying the same thing
to their children
in the rain
of ash

Wait
I say as they head to the rink
and I feel them walk away
as I feel the tug of the mothers
who never saw theirs return

I love you
we cry together
for the heavy crimes of
others that
drown us all
