“H-hey, Mettaton?” Tenna said. “You doing alright?”

Fingertips brushed his shoulders. No static shocks teased the space between them, but Mettaton jolted away all the same. “My apologies. I’m fine.”

Tenna sat on his heels, balling fists into his lap. Thank god the backstage shadows worked in his favor. Also worked against him, too, because he couldn’t tell if Mettaton glanced back. To thank him, to ask if he was okay. Maybe offer another smile, just because. In a matter of seconds, Mettaton marched off, flanked by crew members for final preparations. Talkback reached Tenna: sixty seconds until Mettaton went live.

Of course. Almost showtime. No reason to pull his star performer aside and... ugh, do something dumber than whatever bullshit he pulled off. Snarling past a mouthful of static, Tenna rose and excused himself. Needed to make the rounds backstage and ensure everything ran without a hitch. You know, do his damn job in the Dark World. And not fixate on the fresh memories branded in his circuits.

Easier said than done. Fucking hell, it always was.

Okay, he had to bribe Alphys with an overwhelming stockpile of eroge visual novels and six dakimakura covers of questionably proportioned anime women to patch his joystick strap-on, but that was a price he was willing to pay (literally—with a credit card). Also they were overdue an in-person visit! Two birds, one stone! Absolutely worth it to see Tenna’s reaction, too.

“So then,” he spoke, vibrating, “does that mean—”

“Only one way to find out.” Mettaton waggled a finger. “Care to take it for a spin per our little celebration?”

He should’ve been back in the Dreemurr’s household, warming the living room with his broadcasts. Honestly should’ve been anywhere but the local library, but it was either that or sit on the curb during trash day. At least Toriel was kind enough to drop him off before heading to work. Maybe the media lab could use a CRT TV to play VHS tapes or... something. Hell if he knew. Mostly collected dust in a corner.

Cyber World wasn’t much better. An analog guy such as himself struggled to thrive in a digital landscape, but Tenna knew a thing or two about entertainment. That got his foot in the mansion door. Just, you know, needed to keep his head down. Follow orders. Make the Queen happy whenever she summoned him. Simple enough.

Still. Tenna dwelled on that remark more often than not. The basement, huh? What was so dangerous down there that made it off limits?
