Eli scooped up the medallion, and it stopped glowing. It felt the same as it had in the cave. He put the chain over his head and let the medallion rest against his chest. Tati rumbled low and disapprovingly, staring at it.
"What?" Eli said defensively. "I'm going to need all the help I can get, you know?"
Tati growled softly.
"Sure, you're a big, magical tiger that can shred any threat to pieces.
I'm not. Even with you, there's no guarantee of my safety. Right?" Eli held the medallion in his hand. The heaviness of it felt strangely comforting. "Besides, he's family. He wouldn't, you know, hurt me on purpose. Family has to count for something."
Tati growled again, a little more forcefully than before.
Eli looked her in the eyes. "I'm taking it. I've decided, and there's nothing that you or anyone can do about it. So, you might as well get used to it, or let me do this on my own. Got it?"
