Talking to @gr8ball83.bsky.social about post-truth society this morning reminded me of this story we ran in the Cambodia Daily back in the day. Headlines always had to be like this, because the authorities never told the truth. Disclosure: I edited and laid out this story, also married his daughter.

Accounts of Drama Teacher’s Arrest Conflict

Well-known drama teacher Saing Sosak, 55, will be charges in court today with confining and beating an anti-drug police officer during a drug raid, Heng Pov, municipal judicial police chief, said Sunday.
Accounts differ widely as to what led to Saing's arrest. Saing and his relatives say men dressed in civilian clothing forced their way into his house in Tuol Kok district on Friday without permission, bullying the residents days after an attempt to kill Saing Sosak had put the family on edge.
But police say plainclothes officers were chasing suspected drug dealers through Saing's property when they were caught, tied up and severely beaten for no reason.
“We didn’t force out way into Saing's house, but there is a small path that runs through his property, and the drug dealers ran down that path into [Saing's] compound,” anti-drug police Chief Uy Saothy said,
“Saing Sosak caught my colleague and tied him up [inside the house], hit him on the head until he was nearly unconscious and…detained him there for two hours,” Uy Saothy claimed.
But one of Saing Soak’s sons, who asked that his name not be used, said four motorcycles and a truck pulled up in front of the house Friday. Several men forcefully entered the house.
“They forced three of my brothers into the bathroom,” the son said. “Another brother ran to tell my father, who was upstairs, that someone was trying to kill him.” The son said one of the men pointed a gun at Saing and fired twice, but the shots missed and hit the ceiling when Saing pushed the gun away. The family then tied up the man until authorities could take him away, the son said.
“These men acted like robbers and kidnappers, because they wore civilian clothes and forced into my father’s house,” he said.
While walking down the road last Tuesday, Saing Sosak was shot at three times but not hit, the son said.
Saing was brought in for questioning and arrested Saturday.

Stop the Discourse I want to talk about how I’m rewatching Deep Space 9 right now.

Ferengi bartender Quark says “Qapla’ to you, too,” after he is divorced by a Klingon woman who married him in a scheme to maintain control of her great house. He got into this mess because one night, Quark and his brother Nog were having a slow night on the promenade; their only customer was a drunken Klingon who asked for more blood wine, but wanted a line of credit. Quark went up to him, intending to tell him that Ferengi don’t offer credit, but the Klingon’s aggressive posture led Quark to change his mind. The Klingon was still offended, drew his knife, and waved it at Quark, but the Klingon was so drunk that he tripped and killed himself with his own dagger LOL. Of course Quark is ever the opportunist, so he told the public and the police that he defeated the Klingon in battle, which created this whole domino effect that ended with him saying Qapla’ to you, too.
