At this point, Eugene, your axe safety is the least of our concerns. Writer and MTG nerd. Too young for lead paint, too old for TikTok. He/Him/His
I like it with madness, as it combines the discard and impulse casting in one package. I’m sure you are familiar with tech like Delayed Blast Fireball. But now I’m wondering if this could be a sneaky interesting Mirror of Fate deck 👀
Hulkbuster Armor is neat with a lot of things, but I submit that this lil guy looks like it would fit on nicely:
Not “strictly better” (bc double pips) but it’s half the cost with additional minor upside
Original 1981 pressing (thanks Dad!) but I also hear the 40 year remaster is very good!
There are a lot of bangers to pick from. I go Dinotopia, gives you a clear draft strategy.
Lumengrid Sentinel pairs so nicely with all the artifact-token jackpot machines in today’s EDH. Lockdown a dangerous opponent at instant speed (and it doesn’t say nonland). Wears equipment! Relevant creature type! Cool art! 😎
A lot of cool cards this year, shouting out Saheeli for inspiring and leading my favorite deck that I brewed in 2025: Oops, All Islands! Valakut
Partial to these two in different decks: Spoils can find duals and triomes like Farseek but can *also* put a Mystic Sanctuary in untapped, and Spring//Mind has a cheeky 9 cmc when high cmc matters (and Grozoth)
Scryfall goes off the official Oracle text, which has changed. Here are some examples.
I’ve had a pile of cards for an Epic Errant deck sitting on various surfaces in my office for like two years. I love the concept, but I can’t imagine actually playing it in the limited game time I get these days (and it doesn’t exactly goldfish well)
Ancient One goes to space (it stations Susur Secondi and Uthros), Toph as an Emeria / graveyard combo deck
When Commander Legends dropped I made a Jared deck chock-full of cards that looked like metal album covers. What a blast.
A lot of cards care about your lands having a basic type! A secret weapon for niche strategies (Valakut Oops! All Islands is one of my favorite current decks), but it’s also just cheap mana fixing in Blue - and it’s a wizard
