Eloise had her arms crossed, and her shoulders hunched as she recounted the story. “The city doctors saved her, and they saved me, but I was born a lot earlier than I should have been, so it was touch-and-go for a while. And then, for years, we were both in pretty bad health—I would get sick, then she would get sick, and it would go back and forth where we were in a constant cycle of just feeling awful, and my mom had to try to afford medicine, and it was really hard. At first, there were people in town who felt bad for her, and they would help out with meals and with watching me, but after a couple of years, people sort of gave up on us. On top of that, I was a bad luck magnet—the people who came and watched me would burn themselves on the stove or get mysterious allergic reactions. One time, a little old lady fell down the stairs and broke her hip.” She frowned.

Xander scoffed. “A town full of klutzes.”

“I know how it sounds,” Eloise said defensively. Her arms were still crossed, and her hands were gripping her arms tightly. “But people got suspicious, and they didn’t want to be around us anymore. And my bad luck only got worse as I got older. Our house got robbed. My school burned down, and for some reason, people thought I did it.”

“A town full of arsonists and thieves,” Xander muttered. Junie shot him a look.

The parking lot is mostly empty at this hour, but when we walk in, the owner is busy selling a tub of nightcrawlers to a local fisherman. Grace and I stand back and wait our turn, looking around at the camping chairs, compound bows, and shimmery fishing lures. I do my best to ignore the wall of guns behind the sales counter.

The fisherman walks off, and the owner waves us up to the counter. He's probably in his fifties or sixties. His t-shirt has an American flag pattern; it's clearly old, fraying at the seams and covered in grease stains. He's got fried blond hair sticking out from under a denim-blue bandana. His skin is leathery-tan and covered in sun spots. A black eyepatch is over his right eye. "Morning," he greets us with a phlegmy grumble. He looks at our hands, which are notably empty. "Buying anything?"

"Actually, I was hoping to ask you about something," I tell him. He seems a bit gruff, so I try to be friendly and disarming.

His eye narrows. "You a Fed?"
